The ESV Illuminated Bible, Art Journaling Edition was created to continue in this historic tradition of illuminated manuscripts. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.

These are very different in appearance to the ESV Scripture Journal New Testament Set books but almost identical in size and layout. My walk with the Lord and my ministry have been enriched and blessed through this wonderful translation.Printed on thick cream-colored paper, the Bible’s single-column text setting and wide margins provide generous space for additional notes, prayers, and designs–inviting readers to creatively engage with and reflect on the beauty of God’s Word. The outer box slides upward and it great for protecting the books while moving or storing them but I’m not always sure where to put it while I’m using the set. The Illustration on each cover symbolizes something within that book, sometimes highlighting a passage or two and sometimes highlighting a major theme of the book. The locusts illustrated here are reflective of the plague the Lord sent on Israel as a sign of his anger and judgment for their sin and continued unfaithfulness. The ESV Illuminated Bible places the full ESV text alongside over 500 elegantly hand-lettered gold ink illustrations by renowned artist Dana Tanamachi, encouraging readers to 'light up' the words of Scripture by adding their own artwork and colour to each page.

My stamp pad inks had less show through and no bleed through in these journals (They usually require gesso or some other product that forms a barrier in my other Bibles) The paper doesn’t glare under direct lighting. It’s a beautiful blend of traditional and modern that is sure to find a welcome spot in many Bible collections. With all of the bold lines in the art the paper can’t stop it from showing through from the other side. The included illustration index provides helpful insight as to where the artist drew inspiration for the artwork. The laurel crown here is a symbol of the imperishable wreath promised to those who run to the finish (9:25).

The fireflies illustrated here reference Paul’s charge to the Philippians (in 2:15) to do all things without grumbling so that they might shine amidst the darkness around them by bringing the light of the gospel of Christ.

The text is laid out the same (just with a few gold highlights) and the pages are even numbered the same until you reach a full-page illustration. Judges is the story of the rulers appointed over Israel—leaders the people desperately needed and yet by whom they were ultimately led astray. Aaron’s staff, pictured with almond buds and blossoms, signifies that he was chosen by the Lord to help guide his people toward Canaan. Dana Tanamachi is an American lettering artist, graphic designer, and illustrator whose exquisite typographic murals ignited the worldwide chalk-lettering trend.
