Historical detail has always been a strong point of Kate Mosse’s books so much so that you can easily imagine yourself walking the streets of Amsterdam or the quayside of La Rochelle, or later in the book, the Canary Islands. The writing was so well executed: rather short sentences, nothing florid, but they all carried out all emotions and intentions. While a lot of this information is necessary to understand what the world looked like at the time, and to provide information about the ships that are such a central part of the story, it at times messed with the flow of the story.From the start, with a young woman in Paris to claim her inheritance, this book is full of adventure and spirit, with the main protagonist, Louise, far ahead of her day. It is a very interesting insight into the catholic v hugenot battles in parts of France that I knew a little but now know a bit better!

I get the need to keep the suspense, but it's a lot to ask of readers who are trying to keep track of everything else. She also finds a prominent place in history for a woman, highlighting how this would have been such an incredible situation at the time. Along the way, she meets Gilles Barenton (we never do learn Gillis's birth name, but that's by design, and who cares), who is 15 years her junior. The 3rd tome of the Burning Chamber series is coming out this month and I am so thankful I have been given a galley!
