About this deal

Nikon has provided updates for the SB-900 firmware, something previously not done with Speedlight units. Power isn't that important today with high ISOs; you only need the full power of the SB-910 if you're 80 feet (24 meters) away at ISO 100 at f/1.

I hope someone out there in an Attorney General's office is reading this, and can give Nikon the hard time it deserves: on page B-7 in the large Nikon SB-910 User's Manual, you'll see that Nikon suggests that you change the batteries when they take more than 10 seconds to recycle (20 seconds with Alkalines), while Nikon's published battery life numbers are made while waiting about three times longer to recycle. If you find your camera in genealogy plate of Nikon cameras, then your camera can work perfectly together with the Nikon SB-910. Thermal cut-off feature: I don’t understand one thing- Why does everyone seem to be so annoyed by the current overheat-protection feature that the SB900 has? I suppose that's a good thing, but there's really no reason why a critical switch like this has to be made as small as possible on a flash that's grown in size. I simply cannot deal with the inconsistent light output when firing rapidly for portraits, and the inconsistent CLS functionality.

The Fujifilm XF 23mm F2 R WR delivers a 35mm full-frame equivalent field of view and stands out due to its small size and weather-resistant build. The head swivel mechanism is still the same (though you can go the full 180 degrees in both directions now, and the primary Mode and Zoom buttons are the same. Nikon SB-910 has all the little thingsthat are so indispensable when shooting: card diffuser, button illumination, quick reload, auto focus infrared light, color filter support, smart overheating program, quick latch on the shoe (there are other types, for example in Metz-48 instead of a latch - a nut). This is why I'm sticking with my SB-600 any time I need a big flash — but I'm no longer a news pro or event shooter.

Well, out and out best reliable wireless performance, distance and support comes from Pocket Wizard. For FX cameras, the GNs tend to be very slightly lower for the SB-900 than for the SB-800 for equivalent settings, though the ability to focus the flash head and the 200mm head position can give you a boost if you're not trying to light really wide areas and prefer to limit the flash coverage. This means that the flash is powerful enough, more powerful SB-700, SB-600 and as powerful as Nikon SB-900. Three illumination patterns provide total control over flash coverage, with automatic adjustment for a zoom range of 17-200mm. After some preliminary use, I don't think there's any doubt: get an SB-900 if you're heavy into flash (and retire your SB-800 to dedicated remote wireless use). And with refined operability including illuminated buttons for use in low light and improved thermal cut out protection, the SB-910 is the perfect partner to your D-SLR. Recently I also started using Godox gear, including the XProN trigger and X1R-N receiver, that provide full remote control and TTL capability with both Godox lights and my SB-910 and SB-700 Nikons. Some third-party mounts and accessories are going to have a tough time with that added thickness, though if all you're using is the camera hot shoe it isn't an issue. Otherwise, both still work but you will need to make your flash adjustments from the flash vice the camera menu.
