TLG has become less and less capable of delivering smaller sets that are "smartly" designed without them being part-intensive. This 2 in 1 LEGO Technic Heavy-Duty Excavator (42121) toy has plenty of features for hours of creative play. it looks like I might have struck a nerve, Maybe I have missed a previous explanation as to why Lego uses blue for the Pins, Technic is not my main focus in Lego, however I do own a few sets. As for the flaws mentioned in the review, all of these are very typical for LEGO Technic models of the size, so no surprises here.

They all use essentially the same arm, with 2 movements (none of them have independent control of the bucket). The LEGO Technic universe offers advanced building toys for LEGO fans ready for their next challenge. The main features include a moving arm and a shovel, running tracks and a detailed cabin with a red seat for the driver. Sure, the arm is a similar function, but the rest of the vehicle looks great and completely different.

They mention that it is a very study and entertaining model, great fun for big kids, and has high play and learning values.I wonder if one could rebuild the shovel arm mechanisms to use ratcheting pieces in the joints and remove the wonky dial controls so that it functions more naturally, albeit with more direct human contact to the joints. LEGO components are dropped, heated, crushed, twisted and analysed to make sure they meet stringent global safety standards. Put it this way: people are complaining about the windscreen for much the same reason people are complaining about the blue pins.
