About this deal

Full of worry, her parents tried everything, from new hobbies like reading and painting to medication and visits to a specialist. Tenacity and passion permeate Breadsong, a moving, life-affirming memoir and recipe book by Kitty and Al Tait that celebrates the joys of bread-based baking … The family's amazing story is alchemized with equal amounts of inspiration and deliciousness. A journey which very much speaks to my own family’s experience and which has helped me enormously as a floundering parent in unchartered waters. Kitty, of course, is also very honest: she didn't know why it happened, either, and makes no excuses for it, or for feeling the way she did.

One loaf quickly escalated into an obsession and Kitty started to find her way out of the terrible place she was in. I have read an awful lot of cookbooks over the years, some chock-a-block full of recipes such as Jamie Oliver or Mary Berry, and some with a more story-like feel, like Nigel Slater, but I’ve never read a cookbook with as much heart and soul and passion written in every word as this one. From the texture and colors of the cover to the texture and colors on the pages, it was clearly made with so much love. For more details, please consult the latest information provided by Royal Mail's International Incident Bulletin. It also spoke to me as a baker and I was able to get really excited for Kitty as her journey unfolded. Many thanks to Bloomsbury and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this advance ecopy in exchange for an honest review. Kitty’s Instagram account is therefore a treat: full of baking goods, good humour and a lovely smile!

I particularly liked that her dad and Kitty took turns in writing parts of the book, sometimes about similar things, sometimes about different phases of their journey. It was a brave move for her father to give up the job of teaching to become a baker in partnership with his daughter. just a few of the adjectives I could use to sum up this book which is oh so much more than a cookery book. It's the story of how they ended up running a bakery together, and while that sounds all heartwarming - and it is, absolutely - but it starts because baking a loaf of bread is one thing that Al tries to help Kitty with her crippling anxiety. The instructions are clear, and I liked how the recipes worked together as a collection - using bases covered earlier on to develop different flavours and bakes, for example. Breadsong is exactly the kind of cookbook I love to curl up with - uplifting, inspiring, heartfelt and with wonderful recipes to boot. Stopped at Barnes and Noble, they didn’t have in what I wanted, browsed through the cookbook section. One loaf led to four led to forty and soon I was running a subscription service and then a pop up bakery.
