About this deal

Similar to the After series, it was kind of like Credence was a train-wreck I couldn't look away from. The book is told from multiple perspectives of all the four main characters, though it’s mostly just Tiernan’s.

that was like 200 pages too long, we could’ve gotten the whole point of the book in way less time without all of tiernan’s talking about nothing and going on a car ride and feeding the horses and making breakfast etc etc we don’t care. I’m still processing so I may come back and change this after I’ve thought about it some more but right now it’s a meh. That said, I thought Penelope Douglas does a great job setting the scene in the remote mountains and it really does feel like anything can happen—and it obviously does. All of the men in this book are toxic in their own way, and if you are someone that has a hard time forgiving characters for bad behaviour, this book may really frustrate you. While all the characters were distinct, I found myself partial to Jake, who was so well-developed in the first half and I loved how his 'relationship' with Tiernan evolved as she got closer to all three of them—though it was not smooth sailing by any means and some scenes were definitely harder to read. The central romances were a bit of a clusterf*ck of thing: a massive age gap, step-relatives, dubious consent, etc. the reason might've been to hurt himself and withdraw but it was never really explained fully or even talked about. There's such depth to these characters and it's clear that they're all badly hurting, as there's a lot of pain, anger and resentment in their histories that they've kept with them until now.

i don’t like to read about territorial assholes who will shoot someone because they made conversation with their step-cousin. Tiernan is very quiet at first, rarely talking and when she does it is with as few words as possible. Personally, this book has sold me on Penelope Douglas and I can't wait to read the rest of their backlist. Think I'm going to stop there, but I've read and disliked Penelope Douglas's heroes before so I really should never have put myself through this torture. But I'm so glad I am one of the ones who did and I commend Douglas for following her writing arrow and taking risks. overall i think tiernan was better suited alone, but if she had to pick between one of the 3 guys, i think noah was the best.

It's also completely different to what I was expecting and my advice would be to go into this blind. TL;DR: This book is not going to be for everyone but I’m glad I gave Penelope Douglas another try with this book. I love the idea of living in a secluded area near the wilderness, and this book captures that ambiance perfectly.

Open all the windows and doors of your mind before you start cause you'll be Breathless soon, gasping, groaning, moaning and you'll need to stop and take deep breaths often.
