About this deal

In terms of my teaching, I was inspired about where this would fit into a wide variety of areas of the curriculum, including science, PHSE and history. Chris tries really hard to sleep in his own room, but he’s petrified of aliens getting him in the dark. The fact it is written from a real-life astronaut makes it all the more exciting for the children and is very inspirational for children when thinking about their own dreams.

He was just such a fascinating person from his humble beginnings, his dreams of being an astronaut right from when he was a child to his older adult years.

The Darkest Dark is the debut picture book by Commander Chris Hadfield, international bestselling author of An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth, with spectacular illustrations by illustration team, The Fan Brothers. It functions as an exploration of a common childhood fear, and how young people might confront and overcome that fear, through reexamination and through expanding (or changing) one's perspective, but it is also a depiction of a momentous moment in human history, as seen through the eyes of one child. With spectacular colour illustrations by top team, The Fan Brothers, this gorgeous picture book offers both reassurance and a thrilling ride through space. My daughter loves it and the extra fun for her is that parts of the book and pages glow in the dark. Written by astronaut Chris Hadfield (famous for covering David Bowie’s Space Oddity on the ISS), it is based around his childhood dreams of being an astronaut. The Darkest Dark is a children's picture book co-written by Chris Hadfield and Kate Fillion and co-illustrated by Eric Fan and Terry Fan. Brothers Eric Fan and Terry Fan worked together on the atmospheric illustrations in Chris Hadfield's The Darkest Dark .

He helped create and host the National Geographic miniseries One Strange Rock, with Will Smith, and has a MasterClass on exploration. Chris Hadfield's books An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth, You Are Here and The Darkest Dark have been bestsellers all around the world. When we came to the page in question I didn't draw any more attention to the creatures than I had to but she was so absorbed in the story that she barely batted an eyelid. But when Chris watches the first televised moon landing, he discovers that there is a dark out in Space that is much darker than he's used to. Things appear to move, sounds seem to be heightened and absolutely anything, anything, could appear in the space where it once was not.But when he watches the Apollo 11 moon landing on TV in July of 1969, while on vacation on Stag Island, Ontario, he realizes that outer space, the very thing he finds most entrancing, is the darkest dark there is. I loved everything about this book and although the style of illustrations weren't appealing to everyone, they still had amazing details that left my eyes scanning the pages back and forth way after I finished reading. I have even caught her looking at the book (when i thought she was asleep) in the dark because of the glow in dark parts.

His message to children, and to adults, is wonderfully positive, and worth discovering for yourself. Thunder and lightening outside the window bring the scene to life and she gazes fondly at a huge portrait on the wall.S. Navy test pilot of the year in 1991, Colonel Hadfield was CAPCOM for twenty-five Shuttle missions and NASA’s Director of Operations in Russia. During the day he could let his vivid imagination run rampant as he fought off aliens and traversed through space. Backmatter includes a biography, photographs and illustrated mementos, and an inspiring message from Hadfield about the wonders of the night sky. He was CAPCOM for twenty-five shuttle launches and served as Director of NASA Operations in Star City, Russia from 2001-2003, Chief of Robotics at the Johnson Space Center in Houston from 2003-2006, and Chief of International Space Station Operations from 2006-2008. So much detail went into the drawings that gave it extra historical weight…the Toronto Star newspaper on the nightstand dated July 16, 1969…Walter Cronkite’s face on the TV screen as everyone huddles around.
