In this capacity he first encountered the work of Samuel Palmer and of Blake, and Blake, particularly, was to have a life-long influence on his work. Ardizzone was evacuated to England from Boulogne in late May 1940 and was immediately reassigned to work with Southern Command, documenting the rather peaceful everyday activities of service personnel in the UK at the time. Though his mother was English, his father (who was of Italian descent) was born in Algeria, and so a French national, and worked abroad for the French civil service in the colonies.

What Vaughan saw in ballet was the groupings of people, and people in movement – aspects which would stay as preoccupations and evidence themselves in much of his later work.However, during the Second World War he travelled more widely in Britain and Europe than any other war artist, documenting his experiences in both drawings and diaries which today are kept by IWM. A Rigby, an authority on the artist Frank Branwyn whose murals adorned the school chapel, and Rigby encouraged Vaughan’s evident interest in the visual arts.

Leon Underwood Leon George Claude Underwood (1890-1975) worked in several media – as linocutter, painter, etcher, wood-engraver and sculptor; he also taught and wrote extensively on the philosophy and theory of art. After a few years the family moved to North London and here, interrupted only by his schooling at Christ’s Hospital, Hastings, Vaughan would live for the rest of his life. Ardizzone's father, Auguste Ardizzone, was a naturalised Frenchman of Italian descent, who was born a Pied-Noir in French Algeria, then a colony of France, and worked on overseas government service elsewhere in the French colonial empire. To the utter dismay of his father, he left the security of his employment and by 1929 had had his first work published, illustrating Sheridan Le Fanu’s In a Glass Darkly.
