About this deal

Tragedy struck for the second time when she went completely blind from glaucoma on her wedding day, aged just 24. Her finished account now brings these cameos together in an astonishing account, which both is entertaining and salutary. Aged just 24, on her wedding day, she lost her sight completely because of glaucoma – unrelated to her childhood illness. The coronavirus pandemic from 2020 meant that breeding the dogs had to be paused, and training was difficult due to the closure of restaurants and other public spaces. As each image comes into the NewsPrint Bureau, our team of colour correction analysts check and correct each photograph for colour and brightness, making sure each print is picture perfect. Thus the book fulfils the equally necessary if not more important function of trying to change the received image the general public has of the blind as people unable to work, in receipt of incapacity and other benefits. Jill, an OBE, who received a Lifetime Achievement Pride of Britain gong last year, said: “Even if he had been working, you are told not to move on a platform because it could be dangerous and to get sighted help. If you enjoy a heart warming read or you have any interest in blind issues this is the book for you. Jill has served on local, national and international committees too numerous to mention (she still works for the European Blind Union and the National Federation of the Blind); given hundreds of talks to schools and church groups; raised thousands of pounds for charity; and worked her formidable charm on many politicians, including former ministers for the disabled Nicholas Scott, Sir John Major and Lord Newton.

Dogs that are qualifying as partners now were actually raised over two years ago and it's hard to imagine what times were like then. There have been many books written by people who have lost their sight due to illness or accident, at birth or later stages of their life- to name but a few at random: Jacques Lusseyrand “And there was light”,Sir Ian Fraser “Whereas I was Blind and prof. What little advice they did give was plain wrong, such as that her eye condition made it necessary for her to be sterilised after the birth of her daughter so that she had no more children. The joy that her guide dogs have given to her and the freedom and independence that they have made possible for her shine out. With 80 per cent vision in the remaining eye, she was able to lead a full and happy life until, in a tragic turn of events, Jill suddenly suffered a glaucoma attack on her wedding day in 1964 and lost her remaining sight. It wasn’t until seven years later that Jill successfully completed a training course with her first guide dog and finally, after years of being virtually housebound, was able to begin rebuilding her confidence and reclaiming her independence. She has had six in total, all pure Labrador bitches – her “leading ladies” to whom, in a new book, she pays emotional tribute.

It was through her efforts that providers of public transport realised the need for spoken announcements of bus stops and train stations, structured crossings at major road junctions and pavements uncluttered by obstacles, including illegally parked motor vehicles. Although now in her seventies, with new challenges for those with disabilities always on the horizon, such as electric cars, shared streets and changes to the benefits system, Jill’s contributions to the fight neither cease nor cease to amaze. When they come and take away the dog’s harness, it’s very, very upsetting and I am dreading seeing it happen again. With box canvas quality checked for scratches and marks, we ensure that the product we produce is of the best possible quality. To lessen the impact on people faced with these problems, some claim in mitigation that blindness “is not so much a disability, rather an inconvenience”.

Next came Quella, “a stately dog and so calm”, who was at the altar with her when she married Alvin; then Lady – the “perfect” guide dog. She has never allowed the fact that she has lost her sight to hold her back, and has dedicated the rest of her life to voluntary work, campaigning tirelessly to improve facilities for blind and disabled people. None of this would have been possible without her six guide dogs over the past 40 years: Topsy, Bunty, Brandy, Quella, Lady and her current dog, Amanda.

In this moving autobiography, Jill explains how she went blind in one eye when she was a toddler – as a result of contracting measles – and then lost the sight in her other eye as an adult. Through this book, Jill will be able to share that with many other people who like her would benefit from the mobility and companionship that a guide dog brings. When Jill found out she was pregnant a few months later, doctors urged her to have an abortion – saying her blindness would make her an unfit mother. Health and Social Services failed her badly, providing nothing in the way of information or support. Jill’s autobiography charts her journey from partially sighted child to totally blind adult and beyond, a process of readjusting and learning through grit and determination and then using her knowledge and experience to do everything in her power to help others and to campaign for reforms to secure a safer, fairer and more disability-aware environment.
