About this deal

I was lucky enough to get this eventhough is out print from some time since I wasn't aware that this box was released at that time.

Most riveting are the numerous traditional numbers, the songs that were clearly closest to the Man in Black's heart. A really nice box set, but it's a shame that they really missed the care about the records production.

Not for allowing a musical icon to end his career and life by recording some of the best music ever, but because there are so many excellent recordings here that should have been released during Cash's lifetime. Best of Cash On American offers a memorable 15-song selection of highlights from Cash's first four albums with Rubin. Over the course of five mesmerising CDs, Unearthed shows us just how Johnny Cash's now-legendary handful of recordings for American Records came to be. Through their inconsistencies and quirks (and, more often than not, brilliance), they shed light on how Cash's final records were shaped, edited and produced.

A fifth disc, titled My Mother's Hymn Book, is a complete, previously unreleased solo acoustic spiritual album. If We Never Meet Again This Side of Heaven" was previously recorded by Cash for his 1962 album Hymns from the Heart.Language - Regardless of country of origin all tracks are sung in English, unless otherwise stated in our description. The fourth disc, My Mother's Hymn Book, features gospel songs Cash first learned from his mother as a child and was later reissued as a standalone album in 2004. I don't know, maybe for lack of space, legal stuff (the duet with Joe Strummer on Marley's "Redemption Song" is out of this world), whatever, but even the weakest track is a good one; I like them a lot, all have that touch that only Cash is capable to imprint in them. One book holds the nine vinyl records while the other is a 60-page coffee table book which contains Sylvie Simmons’ sleeve notes, Cash and Rubin’s comments on every track and plenty of photos from the recording sessions.

This mammoth five CD box of seventy nine tracks from his American Recording sessions will only enhance his legend. Tracks 6, 9 and 10 were previously recorded for Hymns from the Heart (1962); tracks 5, 11, 14 and 15 were previously recorded for Sings Precious Memories (1975); and track 7 was recorded in concert for The Survivors Live (1982). Devil's Right Hand" was previously recorded by Cash with the Highwaymen for the 1995 album The Road Goes on Forever. This is newly compiled half-speed mastered limited edition and contains 20 hits including Folsom Prison Blues and I Walk The Line. The set was originally planned to celebrate Cash and Rubin's decade of recording together, and the final mixes had been sent to Cash, but he passed away before receiving them. This was Cash's final album devoted to previously unreleased performances of faith-based music and hymns, following a long string of such releases dating back to 1959 and individual singles and album tracks even before that. Dark as a Dungeon" was previously recorded by Cash as the B-side to his 1964 single "Understand Your Man". I also love the fact that this set contains a different version of the Danzig penned tune "thirteen" than the original American Recording does.
