About this deal

In areas with particularly hot summers, the insects experience summer dormancy or aestivation; in the tropics, coccinellids enter dormancy during the dry season. Under pressure from coccinellid predation, aphid species have evolved to become more toxic, forcing coccinellids to develop immunities. Adult Ladybirds lay up to 50 yellow Ladybird eggs per day under the leaves of plants and up to 1500 in their Ladybird lifetime to continue the cycle of natural pest control. For better establishment, naturally healthier plants, better drought resistance and stronger flowering and fruiting, rootgrow™ is all you need.

In European folklore, an insect acts as a matchmaker, crawling on a woman and then flying to their true love.

They have two orange spots at the sides of the first abdominal segment and a central orange spot on the fourth.

We headed outside to look for ladybird larvae and found a few on the nettles in an overgrown patch of the garden. I recently purchased a fantastic FSC guide to UK’s ladybird species but still seem to be struggling. During the winter months the Ladybirds will hibernate in window frames, walls, log piles or trees, and emerge to mate in the spring. Unfortunately it is not possible to discourage the ladybirds from entering buildings and they can be captured and removed or tolerated.Larvae - Your bottle will contain the very small ladybird larvae and an inert carrier for protection, usually bran husks. The larva of the species was introduced to California in 1887 from Australia, to protect citrus trees from cottony cushion scale.

Only problem is, despite ‘relocating’ some ladybirds from our previous garden when we moved in (I know, my husband thinks I’m a bit dotty too), our garden is fairly ladybird free. The dark red canes really stand out in the winter and look particularly attractive on a frosty morning. Blackberries, blueberries, cranberries, elderberries, honeyberries, lingonberries, figs, goji berries and grapes are normally available throughout the year.Lady beetles overwinter as adults in dry, protected areas such as tree bark, house shingles, or even indoors in attics.

Adult ladybirds lay up to 50 eggs every day, these are yellow and can usually be found under the leaves of plants. But, before ladybugs develop into adults with a bright red shiny body and black dots, they undergo a larval stage. Many structural transformations take place inside the pupal case, as the ladybird develops into its adult form inside the pupal case. However, this ladybird will also feed on many other insects, including scale insects, eggs and larvae of butterflies and moths, other small insects including other ladybirds and it can be cannibalistic. The tree has a round head with slightly arching branches and will make a delightful addition to any garden. We shielded this area off from the lawn by a row of espalier apple and pear trees – an idea I shamelessly stole from the kitchen garden at National Trust property Greys Court. Adult coccinellids develop much of their final colouration within hours, but may not fully darken for weeks or months. Ladybird larvae are easy to find in summer in gardens and local green spaces, but they look very different to adult ladybirds. Use natures own assassins to protect your plants from garden pests without the need to use chemicals.
