The book may be viewed as a "textbook on letting go, being a mature orphan, existing spiritually alone [1]. Somehow the uptight dowager manages to be one of the most sympathetic characters in all of Moominvalley. In the previous book, the patriarch has a midlife crisis and moves the family out to a deserted island to allow himself to feel useful again.

Following this work, Jansson later stated that she "couldn't go back and find that happy Moominvalley again" and so decided to stop writing the Moomin books. In the ‘difficult’ final Moomin novel, Tove Jansson takes the audacious step of entirely excising her core cast, focusing instead on a disparate group visitors who gather at the family’s home, but find them missing.

I worried the book would end with rather nihilistic pessimism – Toft staring out at a bleak sea – but in fact there is a glimmer of hope: Toft spies the Moomins’ boat approaching and runs to meet them. Tove gives her the book’s one and only moment of real drama; when a spot of extreme spring cleaning goes wrong Fillyjonk is left clinging to the roof of her house. They can grope their way up the walls looking for a way in, but they won’t find one, everything is shut, and you sit inside, laughing in your warmth and your solitude, for you have had foresight. Moominvalley in November has been adapted to television once in the 1990 Swedish show Moominvalley, although the character Toft appears in the episodes from the 1990 Japanese anime that adapt Moominpappa at Sea.

All remain at the house, all have very different personalities that clash often, but something about their homey cohabitation during the icy winter changes each visitor in a gratifying way.
