The Lighthouse dates from 1843 and is surrounded by the original dwellings formerly occupied by the keepers of Fastnet Lighthouse, Mizen fog station and Crookhaven Lighthouse. Although the harbour dries at low tide, giving great feeding for a variety of wildlife including a fox and a pheasant, there is a deepwater quay at the entrance to accommodate fishing boats and yachts. The entrance is unhindered, almost a ¼ of a mile wide, steep-to on both side, has lit marks on either side and a sectored light and, as such is very straightforward. Crookhaven, in Irish An Cruachán, derives its name from Sir Thomas Crooke who founded the village in 1610, along with Baltimore, as a Protestant fishing village.
