About this deal

In what is easily my fanciest attempt at woodworking, I'm making a tree/stand for my watches using some red oak stair railing and 1" red oak dowel from HD. When applying Danish oil to oak wood, the type of Danish oil, the thickness of the coat, the temperature and humidity, and the type of oak wood can all affect how long it takes for the oil to cure. This is one of those finishing projects where pretty much anything can be justified, so enjoy the freedom!

Danish Oil will need reapplication to fully protect exterior timber at least once a year, as required, as the wood begins to naturally ‘dry out’.If the wood has been treated with an oil, varnish or paint, you'll need to strip this off, or sand it off with sandpaper prior to applying the Danish Wood Oil.

Because of the mix of ingredients, Danish oil is slightly more durable than Tung oil and is also easier to apply. We were advised by the joiner who fitted them, that Danish Oil would be the best to treat the doors with, so thats what we did. If you want your wood to stay as close to the freshly sanded colour as poss a standard water-bourne finish is the thing to use, but these do the least to enhance figure and chatoyance (cat's eye effect) as seen in spades in Bob's boxes above.

Alternatively, with oak I've just kept wiping it down every few hours and first thing in the morning (for the first 24 hours). It is safe for food contact when dry and can be used for wooden bowls, chopping boards and butchers blocks. Danish oil will feed, enhance and protect both hard and soft woods – penetrating the wood bringing out the natural grain of the timber. The natural finish of Danish oil is satin, and buffing it will make it a bit shinier, but it will not become glossy.
