I told them that when we had Fun Friday at the end of the week, they would get to choose a Desk Pet to keep at school. I know it's tempting because we all know how much your students would enjoy these adorable little pets, but take the first month to ensure that you have clearly taught your rules and routines.

Students who just earned a Desk Pet had to wait until the next Friday to earn the accessories for their Desk Pet.

Those who already earned a Desk Pet the previous week and completed all of the weekly requirements could choose three "accessories" to keep inside of their pets' homes. Instead of focusing on individual rewards such as desk pets, I would encourage you to have your students work towards a class goal to help build a sense of community and teamwork. We’ve talked to teachers and put our heads together at the Teach Starter offices to come up with some fun ways to incorporate these cute critters into the learning process! My students were so creative- some asked if they could use the felt as grass, water, or land habitat for their animal! I think this open ended style of habitat design is really what makes it suitable for upper elementary. It leads into a great classroom discussion about taking care and respecting each other, the classroom, specific parts of the classroom such as the classroom library, etc.
