About this deal

Bringing it back to present day and Cleo has moved on, she’s now married to Wallace but he’s connected to her past in such a way that it’s impossible that the past will not come back to haunt Cleo. The complex characters we follow in her latest novel centre on Cleo Forsum Pryce who we first meet in the present day when she is charged with attempted murder. Not much happens in the first half of the book and then SO MUCH happens in the last couple of chapters that it was somewhat jarring; and the end, while twisty, left me with unanswered questions. Usually, this would be a positive for me as I prefer to be shocked than for a story to go down the obvious route, but I did feel slightly let down when a new twist came into play. Heath is really nothing at all as we first imagine, and as his behaviour becomes increasingly out of control, and his jealousy and paranoia increases, his actions have such a profound effect on Cleo.

All the words, no matter how pretty, no matter how clever, if they don’t come from the heart, they mean nothing. I have to admit the start of the book is confusing, you’re thinking how it’s going to play out but also what’s going to happen. There’s a lot of character build up and scene setting at the start so it did take me a while to understand where the story was going, but I found Cleo such an original and intriguing character that I was absolutely hooked by her story. Her published titles include: Tell Me Your Secret, The Brighton Mermaid, The Friend, When I Was Invisible, That Girl From Nowhere, The Flavours of Love, The Woman He Loved Before, Goodnight, Beautiful and The Chocolate Run. I won’t say any more as I don’t want to put spoilers in this review but trust me, this is such a unique story – I haven’t read a thriller with something similar, so good!

This was my first Koomson book (even though I've had one of her previous books on my shelf for the last 11 years, it's moved with me 7 times! I had high hopes for this book after seeing all the rave reviews but ultimately it fell flat for me very early one. Although this is a clever, multi layered slow burner there are some jaw to the floor reveals with information bombs that explode your expectations and opinions of certain characters. It took me a while to get into this book, but once I did I couldn't stop thinking about what was going to happen to next and looked forward to the next time I could read it to find out. The twists and turns as everything unfolds was second to none and every time you think you’d worked something out, you hadn’t!

Despite all of this, the pacing of the story did throw me off a bit as it didn't really hook me until a good half way through and because of this it made the big twists, turns and ending feel quite rushed. Why has she told the TV company that no more shows will be made, and why on earth is she divorcing Wallace?

There are lots of twists and turns in this book which keep you gripped right until the very last page.
