It had such an amazing and compelling story, but after reading it I just feel quite down and disappointed by the overall ending. Walker’s writing is supercharged with adrenaline-fuelled action and breathless thrills that would rival the most heart-pounding big budget disaster movie. Since his death we have witnessed the rise of medical anthropology, reflexivity, ethnographic film, ethnomusicology, and phenomenology. There’s absolutely nothing Beth wouldn’t do for Alice and Arthur; she would walk through fire, take a thousand bullets, and in the case of this story, she’ll journey to the end of the earth to find them. And while I don’t have any issues with books that address big topics like this, I do feel that this should be done while still concentrating on the main character’s stories and lives.

With no cell service and the closest neighbors over two miles down the road, it’s a city-dweller’s unplugged paradise, right? And either way, it is one of the weird greats, a widely influential and difficult—even impenetrable—cult classic.
