Having NEVER read a fairy-tale in my life and my first introduction to them this week by movie involved high pitched singing and singing animals. Overall, this a wonderful addition to the bookshelf, both as a collection of stories and a historical document showing the rougher origins of widely loved tales.

One of the Four Great Chinese novels, and a worldwide cultural phenomenon, Monkey is reimagined as a Folio edition with exquisite artwork by Mu Pan, including a foldout map, and a new introduction by Frances Wood. Zwerger brings her singular vision to eleven of the Grimm stories in the absolutely gorgeous volume Tales from the Brothers Grimm: Selected and Illustrated by Lisbeth Zwerger ( public library), published in 2012 and translated by Anthea Bell. He found himself suddenly transported to his own childhood — a time when he was obsessed not with painting and drawing but with the imaginative materiality of sculpture. The bloodthirsty biographies of the world’s most infamous pirates are reproduced in this Folio edition of Captain Charles Johnson’s renowned work, including original woodcut illustrations and a fascinating introduction by Margarette Lincoln. The hardcover is beautifully illustrated on the front but rather plain on the side and rear, however it is wonderfully illustarted inside - some in colour but most in black and white - in an attractive classic style.Zwerger’s distinctive pictorial language resonates deeply with the storytelling sensibility of the Brothers Grimm — there is a shared mastery of the interplay between darkness and light, subtlety and drama; a common quietude that bellows as the story breaches the surface of awareness and penetrates the psyche. But if being a financially independent young woman and female entrepreneur in the early 20th century wasn’t already daring enough, in 1923 Gág — who had just been given a one-woman exhibition by the New York Public Library, more than twenty years before Georgia O’Keeffe’s MoMA retrospective prompted the press to hail her as “America’s first female artist” — decided to give up commercial illustration and try making a living solely by her art.

Here are beloved characters, including Snowdrop (Snow White), Briar Rose (Sleeping Beauty), Ashputtel (Cinderella), Rapunzel, Hansel and Gretel, Rumpelstiltskin, The Elves and The Shoemaker, all reimagined by the brilliant award-winning designers at MinaLima. She has lent her immeasurable talent to such classics as Oscar Wilde’s The Selfish Giant in 1984, L. Although the 1936 illustrations for the Grimm tales by Wanda Gág are not necessarily the most visually captivating by contemporary standards, they are perhaps the most culturally significant for a number of reasons. Sendak had first envisioned the project in 1962, just as he was completing Where the Wild Things Are, but it had taken him a decade to begin drawing. The pre-loved books are carefully cleaned and maintained offering a wide variety of general and specialist titles from children's to adults. In a way, this is a color book for grown-ups, done in classic technique of a painter who went through all the necessary schools and learned all the necessary techniques before he got enough courage to express himself, his vision, and his humor. In some cases, this book, as complete as it became in 1909, served only as a starting point for other books, where the artist got a chance to fully explore just one of his dominant techniques. In 1970, London’s Petersburg Press published Six Fairy Tales from the Brothers Grimm with Illustrations by David Hockney ( public library).

Apart from his already superb line drawing, we can also enjoy his love for silhouettes and signature fusions of colors (the first edition has got only a frontispiece in color, but edition from 1909 presented 40 color pictures!
