About this deal

I read somewhere that the publisher of this recent edition changed the color of the rock on the Isle of Gloom from red to green. Inscription in ink to front endpaper (dated 1944); part of ink name has transferred across to front pastedown. Blyton's imagination has really run away with her, and reading the book you begin to feel as if you are really there, looking over the misty ocean towards the Isle of Gloom through a slit shaped window at th Refreshingly, however, Blyton acknowledges just how nightmarish this all is, and there’s a definite edge of brittle trauma to many of the characters. It’s all coming across as rather contrived and unlikely at this point, and nothing like the excitement of them running away from Mr Roy’s school.

A lovely, unadulterated copy (no text changes unlike later editions to make the story more "PC" Beige boards, illustrated front board, spine and throughout. I am being deliberately vague when describing this as a 1980s film as there are two dates online for it. There they meet Joe, a friendly man who helps Philip's widowed mother Allison, at her Art Gallery, and Philip's sister, Dinah. So if you’re thinking of giving this to a child to read – and, while that might require either a sensible child or some parental supervision and discussion, that’s honestly not a ridiculous idea – you might want to get a more modern edition that incorporates this change, since by changing a dozen or two sentences throughout the book the publishers have made the text much less problematic without having any real negative impact on the story. Philip Mannering: A boy with a growth of hair which stands up above the forehead, earning him (as well as his sister and mother) the nickname "Tufty" from Jack. With more fairy tales and short stories being published than anything else, Blyton hadn't yet branched out into Mystery/Adventure so much and had focused on a younger audience.

It was definitely a rights issue which meant that the 1996 adaptation of the full series couldn’t include Castle, but that doesn’t explain why their replacement for it ( The Woods of Adventure) is so dire. All of our books are 100% brand new, unread and purchased directly from the publishers in bulk allowing us to pass the huge savings on to you! Philip meets Jack and Lucy-Ann and Jack's pet bird Kiki, and after they sneak home with him, they move in with Philip, his sister Dinah and their Aunt Polly and Uncle Jocelyn at an ancient mansion at the coast.Top, Tail and Fore edge with Age discolouration, Front Board loose from fep exposing netting, Back Board a little loose at top edge. The text is clean and bright and Includes iconic black and white illustrations by the prolific and celebrated children s book illustrator, Stuart Tresilian.

Minor issues present such as mild cracking, inscriptions, inserts, light foxing, tanning and thumb marking. They manage to add back in the Trents being unwelcome as Mrs Mannering spoke to Uncle Jocelyn who said the children could come, but didn’t tell Aunt Polly. At another point, one of the boys thinks to himself: “ If I were a girl, I bet I’d burst into tears… But as I’m a boy, I must just grin and bear it. Front free end paper missing, frontispiece and two other illustrations neatly coloured-in, spine sun faded, corners and spine ends rubbed, no dust wrapper. I won't give it away here, but it's all very nicely done and has a realistic feel to it, even for this adult reader!

This book feels so innocent now, but in a good way that enhances childhood rather than creates a fear of the unknown and mistrust of everything. Not just mice, which he frequently hides about his clothing, but caterpillars, lizards, and even seasnails. I’m not in general a fan of censoring old books to match modern morality – and of course there’s also arguments to be made about the value of having memorable black characters with agency, in a book series that’s otherwise as vanilla white as you’d expect from the author’s location in space and time. Jack doesn't seem to mind at all that his younger sister Lucy-Ann tags along with him wherever he goes, and he's generally quiet by nature.Joe (formerly Jo-Jo) picks them up at the station, and as with the 90s adaptation he is now a white man, however he is still foreign. Like his late father, Philip has a gift of befriending any type of land-based animal he comes across, and always has a veritable zoo of small animals somewhere within his clothes. The next thing they turn up as Philip’s leaving and he introduces them as ‘friends of mine’, yet to our knowledge they’ve spent about 2. Her books have sold over 500 million copies and have been translated into other languages more often than any other children's author. My grandson read it in a day, so it looks as if I will have to get the other seven in the series to keep him occupied for at least a week!
