About this deal

There maybe have been a few things that bothered me while reading this book but for the most parts the likes outweigh the dislikes. She was the top goalscorer in the UEFA Women's Euro 2022, which saw England crowned champions - their first international trophy since the 1966 Men's FIFA World Cup. This book gave us an insight into Beth as a person and the struggles and hurdles she went through to get to where she is today.

talking about the way her anxiety and dislike for leaving her comfort zone really resonated with me.

i started reading this book with the view of “oh i like beth mead, let’s read this” but as i got further into the book, i realised just how much i related to beth, from her mental journey, to the locations (eg southampton, whitby, and st albans). Beth Mead was the standout player from the England team, although to read her story you will be struck by just how humble she is. I found out from this book that men receive new football boots EVERY game, while women are expected to play with the same ones until they can’t anymore? The journey to European Champion and Player of the Tournament wasn’t easy, success didn’t come without challenges and perseverance. Reading Beth’s experiences it can be easy to forget how young she is, and it can make you sigh with disappointment to think that it wasn’t the 70s when she was faced with sexism, segregation, and bigotry.

Now, Beth shares the challenges that shaped her, what she faced on the journey to the top, and the life events that made her stronger – from being dropped from the England squad and receiving devastating family news, to finding her best form under the guidance of Jonas Eidevall and Sarina Wiegman. I remember the days of, football is for boys, you can't play with us and I am pleased to see that sport is moving in the right direction, but there is still a long way to go. A very inspiring story that journals Beth Mead's football career from the start all the way up until the infamous Euros win. So is being a non football fan in London is hard being a female footballer is a billion times more difficult, which is what makes Beth and the other Lioness' story even more incredible. I rewatched some of those moments again having read her perspective and was amazed all over again that England won the Euros.Despite disappointments along the way, Beth focused on achieving her ambitions and has become one of the country's most recognised footballers, male or female. It sounds like such a minor thing, but we put so much pressure on ourselves as players that we often forget this. Now, Beth shares the challenges that shaped her, what she faced on the journey to the top, and the life events that made her stronger, from being dropped from the England squad and receiving devastating family news to finding her best form under the guidance of Jonas Eidevall and Sarina Wiegman. Unlike some memoirs, at no point did I feel like I was waiting to get to a more interesting bit, not one part felt drawn out. Just like Megan Rapinoe’s One Life, this was a great insight into what it’s actually like for female footballers, but this time from a British perspective.

Being able to read the player’s perspective of one the biggest turning points of my life just made me love everything that happened this summer more. It opens with a prologue detailing the disappointment of not making it to the 2020 Olympics, and then moves on to tell us her whole football journey from childhood to the 2022 Euros. This helps to shed light on the difficulties so many of our top players have faced to make it to where they are now in football.
