About this deal

A graphic novel edition of the book, illustrated by Danica Novgorodoff, was published October 13, 2020. The tragic event has left him hurt and confused, with the addition of a broken mother to account for. J'ai quand même bien aimé globalement, le personnage est sympathique et on espère qu'il fera le bon choix. Rather than presenting the reader with a neat resolution, Reynolds' ending forces the reader to come to their own conclusion. Will learns how each of the ghosts is connected with the rules, as they express surprise, sadness, skepticism, or regret at Will's plan.

Grief, Fear, and Violence (cycle) - "The Rules" play a huge part in establishing the setting, context, and pattern of violence. If you are reading this, and you happen to be one of these boys, first of all, you're reading this Jason's master plan is already working (muahahahahahaha) and second of all, know that Jason totally feels you. But as he takes the elevator down, with a gun tucked in his pants, it stops on each floor and a ghost from Will's past enters, all victims of gun violence, but will that be enough to change his mind ?I had to read this book for an assignment in my senior year of high school and really enjoyed the book. The overall theme of the book is one of revenge, passed down through generations and strengthened through the community they live in. I would’ve loved to have seen this story fleshed out a bit more; most of the pages have only 10-20 words printed on them, and I just think that, had this been written like most verse novels, where there was a solid paragraph or two per page, it would’ve carried the impact across so much better and would have meant that much more. I was invigilating in a GCSE English room recently, and I picked up this book whilst I was waiting for the students to enter!

When the elevator finally reaches the ground floor, Will is left with the final decision of whether or not to continue with his plan to seek revenge or to take a different path and help end the cycle of violence. Long Way Down is a powerful young adult novel that explores violence in the lives of these young black men. the novel ends with some hope that Will will make the right decision and has been influenced by the people he encountered during that long ride down. You know when you haven’t fully grasped the story they way you would have wanted to because you’re reading too fast and you just know that there are underlying gems that you are missing out on, but you can’t stop reading?Spanning a mere one minute and seven seconds, Reynolds' new free-verse novel is an intense snapshot of the chain reaction caused by pulling a trigger. The "rules" are the root of the perpetual cycle of violence that is the cause of so many senseless killings. If the blood/ inside of you is on the inside/ of someone else,/ you never want to/ see it on the outside of/ them. Long Way Down is a young adult novel, written in prose, that tells the story of a teenage boy, Will who is seeking revenge for the murder of his older brother.

After earning a BA in English from The University of Maryland, College Park, Jason Reynolds moved to Brooklyn, New York, where you can often find him walking the four blocks from the train to his apartment talking to himself. After finding his brother's gun, he explores this dilemma in the long elevator ride down from their eighth-floor apartment. He peels back the individual stories that led to this moment in the elevator and exposes a culture inured to violence because poverty, gang life, or injustice has left them with no other option. This was a powerful lecture with some certain messages about life choices, presented in an exceptional way. Sara has extensive knowledge in teaching literacy skills to struggling students and students who speak another language.

What Jason knows is that there are a lot — A LOT — of people, young, old, and in-between, who hate reading.

While the prose of these two books are certainly different, I found Long Way Down slightly superior because of the narrative in verse. It is a constant reminder that the protagonist is only fifteen, being put into a situation many could never imagine. The rules that have been set by his family and community, because validation lies there and it’s the only way a situation has ever been handled. Striking ink-and-watercolour illustrations bring the setting to life, while the comic-book layout adds pace and urgency to the narrative. For readers who perhaps don’t find reading that fascinating or find it difficult discover books that reflect their surroundings, because there is so little of it.The layered, fragmented layouts found across many spreads have potent impact, along with stylistic touches such as Polaroid photos, video screens, and storyboards seamlessly substituted for panels. I think this book has a lot of layers that don't come through at first, but that kill you more and more the deeper you look.
