Fortunately, it is available for digital download on Kindle and Comixology or streaming on DCUniverseInfinite for reading, and that’s how I’ve been able to reread the book because I borrowed it from my local library and read it years ago. From the start, we are thrown into the midst of the action and Dick's journey to becoming Nightwing was a bit rapid. But I found in reading Nightwing: Year One that the story is as much about Nightwing's origins, ultimately, as it is about Jason Todd's--making this as much Nightwing: Year One as it could be the precursor to the year one story of Robin II.

On the subject of Scott McDaniel's art, I'll say that he's a very nuanced stylist who can be extremely hit or miss, particularly when he ventures outside his comfort zone, but giving him six issues of Nightwing to draw is like tossing a slugger a hanging fastball right over the plate. Much of what we see here--Dick Grayson's firing, his first meeting with Jason Todd--never actually happened, or at least, it happened entirely differently (and more amicably) pre-Crisis, and post-Crisis, it didn't "happen" so much as it was related in flashback. Nightwing having to convince Commissioner Gordon he's the former Robin and the way he does it is cute while his trip to Arkham to pay a visit to the Joker is a trip that does nicely to distinguish him both from his former persona but also from Batman. While writing multiple Punisher and Batman comics (and October 1994's Punisher/Batman crossover), he also found time to launch Team 7 for Jim Lee's WildStorm/Image and Prophet for Rob Liefeld's Extreme Studios.Batman is attempting to remain in control but challenged by Robin (Grayson) starting to be his own man. However, Nightwing brings an attitude, style, and level of action to the comics that is very entertaining. Luckily, outside of the comics we also had Batman: The Animated Series and when the show moved from Fox to Kids WB, Nightwing was added to the mix. Watch Dick Grayson forge his path from Robin to Nightwing even as he himself wrestles with the larger question of "Who is Dick Grayson without Robin?

Besides that, if you've got access to a decent library of trades and back issues, you can follow Dick's journey from adolescense to manhood like he were a family friend who dressed up in tights and lost his family in a freak circus accident. Featuring weekly comic release discussions, creator AMAs, a friendly and helpful userbase, and much more!

I know some aren't a fan of McDaniel's style but I think it works well with acrobatic characters like Nightwing.

And given my fascination with the friction and distance caused by Dick outgrowing his role as Robin, I loved being able to learn about the pivotal confrontation that pushes him out into the world on his own.

Overall, I like the artwork for this graphic novel, and it has a unique look that makes for a memorable book. He is (along with artist Graham Nolan) the creator of the Batman villain Bane, the first permanent addition to the Dark Knight's rogues gallery in 40 years and for which he won 1993's Wizard Fan Award for best new character. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. They have created a dynamic style that has great movement, which is perfect for a character who was with the circus.I hope DC Comics will reprint Nightwing: Year One again, but for now, I’ll just be reading it on DCUniverseInfinite.
