I'm no expert by any means and it's my first BMW but to me it seems it's a faulty NOx sensor or probe. In addition, I believe that the mechanic saw the consequences of his “performance” when demounting the damaged sensor and understood very well that these damages were created by his own mistake. My parts and labor warranty ends on the ��13th of December so it will be tricky to get costs back and also the car could give out during my holiday which will f**k it up tremendously but then at least I have irrefutable proof the car was faulty from the start and a higher chance of getting a refund under the Consumers Rights Act. IF there was nothing else on the diagnostic aside from the NOx sensor, then you'd be daft to not change it to at least rule out what the diagnostic has confirmed as a certain failure. When you say white smoke, how much are we talking, and when does it happen (ie: when the car is cold or hot, etc)?

Update: I've decided against replacing the NOX sensor as members on another forum have pointed out there could be several issues and to find the culprits a specialized BMW dealer should read it out with proper diagnostic software.

I had the same diagnostic done and was told it was the nox sensor my car is a 118i first thing on a morning it is very sluggish and makes a loud noise like a bad Diesel engine then after 30 seconds it jerks the warning light comes on then it runs fine. Also i have the latest Inpa just bought it a few weeks back my last was out of date for the latest BMWs, do i also need Ista to code the NOXEM or just Inpa. There is no eml, basicly was serviced by a specialist local to us a few months back who told her there was a good few fault codes on the ecu, took it to BMW today who said the nox sensor was at fault.

I would be surprised, however, if there were no other faults shown if the car runs like a sack of shit, as you describe.You should expect to receive your refund within 72 hours of receiving your package to the our warehouse, however, in many cases you will receive a refund more quickly.
