The psychical and psychological effects were very interesting to read about, as well as the change in dynamics between the relationships. While I was expecting a different story, Nod delivers in establishing a truly atmospheric semi-dystopian infused survival horror.

The veneer of civility is thin and threadbare, after just a few days of no sleep for 99,9% of the world's population, all is chaos.Based upon the synopsis of Nod, I thought that the book was going to tell an interesting and unusual apocalyptic story.

Reality is distorted as the conceptual fiction of the world of Nod turns fact in the eyes of the Awakened. Lastly, two scenes later, Han Solo and the Millennium Falcon are only just dropping out of hyperspace into the asteroid field that used to be Alderaan so he hasn’t even met Princess Leia yet, let alone been flirted with by her. However, Paul doesn’t seem to know the difference between one African-American actor (Samuel L Jackson) and another (Ving Rhames). The protagonist was so deeply and utterly unlikeable that I honestly hoped he'd die a horrible death at some point.The modes of madness and destruction into which the various people in the story eventually fell seemed to occur more because they were narratively helpful than because they were a logical consequence of the story's premise. In the end the mysteries are essentially left unexplained, which may upset some readers, but if they were to step back and try to imagine any denouement that would have satisfied them they might admit that none would and so Barnes was right not to try. Adrian Barnes completed (much much more successfully) the same MA course in writing that I once did.
