About this deal

This can be worked into the design technology curriculum where children not only need to bake cakes, but also design the packaging, use their maths knowledge to weigh ingredients etc. The poem really is funny and tells a little story about when Michael Rosen’s was a boy and his mum would make chocolate cake which was his favourite snack.

He illustrated Tiny Little Fly (Walker Books) a witty book of rhyme by Michael Rosen, in 2009 before emigrating to America. Using a hand-beater, mix to combine, then slowly add hot water and mix well, until you have a smooth batter.

It is so engaging and memorable as one of my tutees recommended it as she loved it when she watched it at school. As the most iconic and well-known children’s book brand in the UK today, we are always on the lookout for innovative ways to tell the world’s favourite stories and for brilliant new debut talent and brands that connect with today’s young readers, from newborn up to twelve years old. Rosen's use of sounds and noises will really bring to life the book and get children interested in reading. Michael Rosen is obviously a fellow chocolate cake fan and I could empathise with the little boy in the charming illustrations very strongly. Though you do have to melt some chocolate over a double boiler, which is a job for the parent, or at least one that involves close supervision.

Not only is it enjoyable for him to listen too but for myself reading this book to him, using lots of funny and silly noises to bring the book to life.

They aren't difficult but they do require a certain amount of patience as you have to wait for them to cool completely before icing and so on. The activities are suitable for both KS1 and KS2, and include pre- and post-reading discussion prompts, fraction practice using cake, and lessons that will develop spoken language skills and exercise imaginations. The illustrations reminded me of my own drawings in childhood, they give the book an authentic feel.

For example, Rosen’s story telling is second to none, therefore this can be harnessed and used to develop children’s own story writing and storytelling. Up the stairs… *stairs noise*, along the passage, now I know where the creaky floorboard is now, so all I’ve got to do is tread over it, ‘cause if I tread on it, and it makes a noise, I am.

The poet, Michael Rosen, is so very enthusiastic it becomes infectious and it is all through something as simple as eating chocolate cake. Right off the back of reviewing "I Really Want the Cake" by Simon Philip and Lucia Gaggiotti, this is another great tale of a midnight feast gone wrong. upon seeing the chocolate cake is often used in YTPMV's as its tonal nature allows for it to be pitch-shifted into melodies (see Richael Mosen's Michael Does the Can-Can). By doing this you are making buttermilk; you can replace the ¾ teaspoon of cream of tartar with ½ tablespoon lemon juice or ½ tablespoon vinegar.
