About this deal

Her third book Counterfeit follows two Asian American women, Ava and Winnie, who band together to grow a counterfeit handbag scheme into a global enterprise – and with it, Kirstin’s writing career blew up.

Her personality is such that she could convince anyone to do anything and she does just that by convincing Ava to join her counterfeiting scheme. I am not sure if this is a stereotypical portrayal of the culture or Ava’s attempt to capitalise on white people’s stereotypes about her culture. In this crime drama, a risk-averse former lawyer joins an elaborate fakebag scheme to finally get some thrills. This one is so fast-paced and bingeable that it’s already been scooped up to be turned into a TV show.If you are the publisher or author and feel that they do not properly reflect the range of media opinion now available, send us a message with the mainstream reviews that you would like to see added. Did you have a sense of the broader picture as you wrote the first version, or did it stay with you and grow after the fact? Despite some of the serious themes, there was a lightheartedness to the story that made this a well-balanced read. Ava blames her upbringing for her lack of agency in decision-making: “It was easier and less risky to vanish into the image that my parents — and the world — had of the good Chinese American daughter.

The first part is written in Ava’s first person perspective, whereby she is narrating her experiences with Winnie and also her personal issues to the detective handling the case. She finds out the secret to her success is that Winnie is running an illegal counterfeit exchange importing near-exact replicas of luxury handbags. But when their spectacular success is threatened and Winnie vanishes once again, Ava is left to face the consequences. With all that said though, this wasn’t just a superficial story about a counterfeit handbag business gone awry. xD It brought a lot of tension to it though, because the whole way through you had to wonder, how much is the detective believing her?

I’ve actually been to Guangzhou for a work trip and I remember people telling me I should check out one of those markets. That is, until the reader comes upon the story which is being narrated by Ava while she’s spilling her guts to the detective who has sniffed out the scheme. It just has so much in it that you can dig into and it was really fun to have those debates and analysis of character motivation and stuff like that. She's married to a successful surgeon and has just taken an indefinite career break to raise her adorable toddler. This is the story of Ava Wong and her college friend Winnie Fang, who go into "business together" selling luxury designer counterfeit handbags. The characters were mildly entertaining and while there were some twists and turns I didn’t feel I connected to them as well as I could have. But beneath this façade, Ava’s world is crumbling: her marriage is falling apart, her expensive law degree hasn’t been used in years, and her toddler’s tantrums are pushing her to the breaking point. As a strait-laced, rule-abiding Chinese American lawyer with a successful surgeon as a husband, a young son, and a beautiful home--she's built the perfect life. Ava has money, a career, a husband, a child, but Ava has hit a wall after spending her whole life doing everything she is supposed to. Winnie desperately wanted to fit in college and Ava seemed kind of standoffish and not willing to help Winnie—a little bit of mean girl behavior.

She needs someone with Ava’s background and despite her initial reservations, Ava eventually agrees to join in. When their scheme is threatened and Winnie bolts, Ava is forced to face the consequences and must decide how to best play her hand. She’s a Stanford alum, a highly paid lawyer lady, has an amazing husband who’s a doctor, and the pair have a lovely two-year-old son. Publication information is for the USA, and (unless stated otherwise) represents the first print edition. It seems some authors like Kirstin Chen are never planning to change this writing style, which is dangerous to many people in different ways. Out of the blue Winnie gets back in touch with a proposal that Ava work with her in her new business venture which happens to relate to counterfeit handbags. But beneath this façade, Ava’s world is crumbling: her marriage is falling apart, her expensive law degree hasn’t been used in years, and her toddler’s tantrums are pushing her to the breaking point.
