About this deal

The relationships between the characters are sometimes messy and complicated, but you can really feel their connections, even when they disagree with each other. Annie and Lee were just children when a brutal revolution changed their world, giving everyone--even the lowborn--a chance to test into the governing class of dragonriders. she wanted to break the stereotype that people had about Serfs (lowborns) and make a name for herself but at the same time she found it difficult to do so because of her bond with lee, who is a highborn. Fireborne is an exceptional first installment of The Aurelian Cycle, a series full of political commentary and moral ambiguity.

As a serf she would never have been permitted near a dragon, but now she and Lee are dragon riders, for the revolution made it possible for commoners to test for dragon riding. If you like a lot of government, a touch of war and an in depth relationship then you've got to check this out!

By the time 35% of Fireborne rolled around I was firmly rooting for Annie and Lee to overcome the uncomfortableness between them to be together. And I've made this sounds way, waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy more exciting than Fireborne really is. Plus she was possibly flying her dragon for longer than Lee, and I suppose she would get better tutors. Annie’s lowborn family was executed by dragonfire, while Lee’s aristocratic family was murdered by revolutionaries.the story is pitched as Aegon Targaryen and Hermione Granger with dragons, set in the aftermath of a bloody revolution. despite it’s flaws, i was glued to it thanks to the fast moving plot, complex characters, and political intrigue. The farther I read the more bored I got and at 55% I realized not much action was going to take place. the flaws of inherited power versus the complications of a merit system is the crux of the argument presented here.

Only children when they were orphaned during the revolution past, the two found friendship in the other. Revolutionary flames ignite around Annie, Lee, and a brand new character in the follow-up to Fireborne–now in paperback! It asks the question "What happens when the new regime begins making the same mistakes as the one it fought to overthrow?

By the end of this one the action certainly picked up but I would have loved for that to have happen much sooner. To me Fireborne was one of those so-so young adult novels that the biggest downfall to me was the incredibly slow pace of the story. There’s a point in Fireborne where a famine strikes the country and they have to institute rationing, enforced by *jazz hands* dragon riders! i’ve been eyeing this trilogy since months but never had the chance to read it so when i finally did, i had high expectations - obviously. Now they are both rising stars in the new regime, despite backgrounds that couldn't be more different.
