About this deal

As a young child, Katharina von Bora was left at a catholic convent, later taking vows to become a nun. My understanding of the tv series is that Luther pushes the boundaries and is a dark character and given this book is written after the tv series to try and explain (prologue) the Luther character I think the author has gone overboard in the violence and nature of the crime Luther is investigating which detracts from the story (and I have read a lot of crime novels). I enjoyed this quite a bit, although I think that I would've enjoyed it more, had I seen some TV episodes and was more sensitive to the characters, especially Luther.

Luther is the thinking man's combatant, a scholar/warrior, a David Bowie enthusiast and moral strategist, with a hint of the mystical. Once the scene had been set, then for the very first time in all my 'Luther' experiences, I was able to correctly predict the outcome. Neil Cross's story of DCI John Luther of the London Police force seems to have been written as a prelude to the BBC series stories, and introduces the main characters. Combining a creeping sense of unease and a tense plot, it’s a small town mystery that will have you hooked from the start. So I am currently reading Solar War by John French, but happened to pick up the Luther: First of the fallen book pretty cheaply so wanted to try giving it a spin.

This book is nerve-shreddingly gritty and unbelievably fast-paced, and the crimes are sinister and complex.

She concludes by comparing the novel to the television series stating "What this book offers is bleaker, more confronting and, well, terrifying.

The main story arc of the new season suggests that time is running out for Luther's less-than conventional working methods. A tall and intuitive detective follows leads, but not necessarily the rules, to obtain a just solution. The killer ignores it and sharks through a haze of the Lamberts’ scent: their clothes, their deodorants, their perfumes, their cleaning products, their bodies, their sex.

It's a really fantastic read, but my god does he swear, I mean, I myself swear like a sailor on shore leave, but this even made me say WHOA, enough! Great and intense pacing, detailed and real characters, in a setting that will haunt you (I know its haunted me a bit) for a while after you read it. The Luther book tells the tale of the case of child killer Henry Madsen who was a major bad guy in the TV series. He strides through sliding doors into Accident and Emergency, approaches the desk, and badges the Filipino triage nurse.I stumbled across Luther on one of the On-Demand download channels having missed it's original broadcast. While Cross has written other novels, this feels more like an adapted screenplay, it's dialogue heavy but description light. What is particularly worthwhile about this book is the character of DCI John Luther, a moody, difficult, man with a volatile personality and absolute tunnel vision when it comes to getting the bad guy.

You will be installed in the story by the first page; it is so exquisitely brazen, you will screech and howl before it is over.

Finally, Cross has realised that even in a hyperreal, comic-book world, policemen can't ring up the number of bodies that Luther does and continue to get away with it. Cross is adept at exploring, in pared back language, the mind of not only killers but the brutes who roam our streets and demonstrating what it’s like to lack a conscience or, worse, to be convinced that what you’re doing isn’t wrong.
