About this deal

I found this on a shelf at this random cabin I was staying at and it really opened my eyes to the world. This sequel to My Posse Don't Do Homework, which has been made into a movie, captures once again the spirit of a hardworking teacher whose wit, verse and Marine training help her cope with the societal dramas that entrap her students--Northern. Sowell's quarrel with "values clarification" programs (like sex education, death-sensitizing, and antiwar "brainwashing") isn't that he disagrees with their positions but, rather, that they divert time and resources from the kind of training in intellectual analysis that makes students capable of reasoning for themselves.

The teacher no longer cares if anyone learns, and the belligerent ones no longer have to try to care.I had very little input to the movie and much of it is fiction, at times so far removed from fact as to be ridiculous. The book goes much more in depth into the curriculum, class room management style, and lives of children in Miss Johnson’s classes. There was a part where a non-white kid was talking about how he went up to a person (presumably white, I think) on the streets and asked if he could have their jacket.

A lengthier description: “His hair was cut close to his head, and a lightning bolt was shaved into the left side of his skull. Along the way, Johnson learns a few lessons of her own, from simple management skills (``outshouting kids is like trying to teach a pig to sing'') to, most reluctantly, the hard facts of life (``You can't save a kid who doesn't want to be saved'').

LouAnne has presented keynote addresses to the National School Boards Association, the American School Counselors Association, the National Staff Development Council, and the European Council of International Schools, among others. I have to say that I was disturbed by some of the techniques that Miss Johnson used in the classroom with her students.

No mention of boyfriend or husband or friends outside of school - she was committed to those kids - reminds me of the old days when women were not allowed to teach after they got married. This book is not written as a linear story, but a series of incidents that took place over the course of a couple years. The students show some interest in such activities, but withdraw when LouAnne tries to teach the curriculum. Desperate to reach the students, LouAnne devises classroom exercises that teach similar principles to the prescribed work but using themes and language that appeal to the students. Johnson was towards her students and maybe they could learn something to make themselves become better educators. Also, her poignant philosophy of replacing words, where she used "I have to" being "choose", and "I can't" being "don't want to", this actually was enlightening for me! Her genuine care and persistent dedication to help students advance in their courses, and in their lives, make us reminisce on our favorite teachers who made a difference to our lives. I remember going to the movie theatre in middle school and watching “Dangerous Minds” starring Michelle Pfeiffer.I truly envy such a satisfying profession, wherein one can retire to bed with the contentment of having touched someone in a significantly meaningful way. Whether it has to do with something they were learning in school or something that they could use socially.
