About this deal

But--the tale is such great fun and is such a wild bobsled of a ride through Farjeon's winter wonderland that one can suspend one's disbelief in psychic happenings. Indeed, eventually the travellers find themselves reunited in a house they stumble across in the snow. Showboat Medical Examiner Margot Heavner makes it clear that, breaking with her department’s earlier practice ( The Bone Collection, 2016, etc.

While the eerie tone contributes greatly, there is not much mystery surrounding the characters as Farjeon presents them. It is an interesting listen, especially knowing it is one of a number of forgotten British mystery classics republished by the British Library. They wonder if they’ve made a rash decision, one that may lead to their demise miraculously when they come upon a house, ring the bell and when receiving no answer find the door unlocked, no one home but a fire is burning. We judge life by our own reactions and sensations, and the reactions and sensations of others are often mere incomprehensible theories. However, that is also it’s undoing as the reader’s expectations are unceremoniously crushed by the second half. I loved this book, maybe it's just the right time of the year to read a snowbound mystery at Christmas but it was great!

Quickly becoming lost, the group discovers a very comfortable country house that is both well-provisioned and abruptly empty. When he died at Hove in Sussex in 1955 his obituary in The Times wrote of his "deserved popularity for ingenious and entertaining plots and characterization". By the time the storm ends, four people will have been murdered, and the survivors, not the police, will deliver justice in the satisfying ending. Die Charaktere waren alle toll ausgearbeitet und der Autor hat es geschafft, mit seinen Worten Bilder in meinem Kopf zu erzeugen. After this delightfully intriguing start, things get more and more puzzling for the trapped visitors.

It had the potential to be one of those fun when you're in the mood for it kind of books, but became harder and harder to ever get in that mood, because I didn't care about any of these people and the constant verbal interaction between the characters I couldn't warm to made it rough going. I ended up losing track of all the characters and I still am not sure who the dead body buried in the snow drifts was supposed to be. Our protagonists are a group of strangers who share a compartment on a train and get stuck in a snowstorm just days before Christmas. But a deserted house where a bread knife lays on the floor, the kettle is boiling, the fires are lit and tea is laid.

Mystery in White tells the story of a group of people who met when they shared a train carriage on a service out of London that ended up stuck in the snow on Christmas Eve. The character holding the mystery element of the story together relied a bit too much on info dumping in chunks and no puzzle fan will be impressed with the statement: ‘I am groping my way through sensations as well as known or deduced facts,’ nor ‘When you find the atmosphere facts resolve themselves inside it.The train’s original departure point doesn’t really make any difference to the rest of the story though. On the way, they come across an unlocked house with dinner laid, kettle boiled and a fire on, but no one seemingly at home.

for a stand-alone about a police detective, a developmentally delayed boy, and a package everyone in North Dakota wants to grab. He follows footprints through the snow, sees this, that and the other, and encounters two important characters, a father and daughter, whom he leads back to the house by following his own trail. There are several more titles in the British Library Crime Classics series that I plan to share with you over the next few month.
