About this deal

While the brand claims that it has a gel texture, we found it to be a bit more rich and creamy than a traditional gel, but this actually made it hydrating enough to keep dry skin looking and feeling moisturized throughout the day. It is just a tad greasy, meaning that those with oily skin might want to proceed with caution, but it’s not so greasy that it feels heavy or looks overly shiny. On its own, it creates a luminous finish on the skin with absolutely no white cast, and when layered with makeup, it provides a radiant glow that helps foundation look skin-like. To find a face moisturizer that won’t clog your pores, look for something with non-comedogenic ingredients. Our experts specifically recommend ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, glycerin, and squalane, because they moisturize skin without clogging pores. They also recommend avoiding comedogenic (pore-clogging) ingredients, like coconut oil, cocoa butter, and lanolin. If you’re especially prone to clogged pores, you may also want a moisturizer made with comedolytic (pore-clearing) ingredients, like salicylic acid. to 4.7 stars: These face moisturizers are excellent—they might have minor flaws, but we still recommend them. Why It's Worth It: Tatcha's The Silk Sunscreen features the brand's silk protein, which is a blend of sericin and fibroin. According to New York City-based dermatologist Morgan Rabach, MD, "sericin forms a layer of protection over the skin and may help promote hydration while fibroin may help repair skin cells and balance moisture levels." When you mix that with the formula's hyaluronic acid, you'll notice dewy, brighter skin. You already know how important it is to wear sunscreen 365 days a year, rain or shine. You should also be applying moisturizer daily, no matter your skin type. Enter the beauty of a moisturizer with SPF—the two-in-one product that helps you cut down on steps in your morning skincare routine. When we tested Shiseido’s Waso Mega Hydrating Moisturizer on oily skin, it proved hydrating—but it made our skin feel oilier. The moisturizer was also slow-absorbing and prone to pilling, but we think it’d be effective for combating dryness.

The moisturizer is also oil-free, fragrance-free, and sensitive-skin-friendly. So it’s great for a range of skin types. Paris has combination skin and uses the tinted version of this moisturizer every day. But it wowed us when we tested it on dry skin, too. Although we loved this moisturizer, we noticed it had a slight sunscreen smell at first, but once the formula absorbed into our skin, the scent faded away. First Aid Beauty’s Ultra Repair Cream did a great job hydrating our skin, boosting our moisture levels by 11 to 31 percent. But it felt heavy and greasy—more like a night cream than an everyday moisturizer. Kopari recommends this moisturizer for dry and normal skin types. But when we tested it on oily skin, it worked like a dream, too. According to our moisture meter, the cream boosted moisture by 36 percent while reducing oil by 41 percent. And it smoothed out our skin without any shine or grease. We especially love that the lotion went on smoothly and left behind no residue, even when tested on darker skin tones. SPF 15 should be the minimum for your moisturizing sunscreen. “Using a combination moisturizer and sunscreen can provide sufficient sun protection, so long as you choose a product that is broad spectrum (meaning it protects against UVA and UVB rays) and ideally it has an SPF of 30 or higher,” Dr. Allen says. If your SPF moisturizer will be your main source of sun protection for your face, opt for a level that’s on the higher end. You can layer your moisturizer over other sunscreen products, but one with broad-spectrum coverage will help you cut down on the amount of products you’re layering. Skin Type

A 2018 review concluded that moisturizers benefit skin health by delivering healthy ingredients to the skin. These ingredients may include: A person should see a dermatologist if they experience any of the following conditions or changes to their skin:

SkinCeuticals’ Triple Lipid Restore 2:4:2 may be the priciest product on our list. But when we tested it on combination skin, it worked wonders. The moisturizer balanced out the oiliest parts of our face, making them look matte rather than shiny. And it hydrated all our dry spots, boosting moisture by 5 percent, according to our moisture meter. The moisturizer was lightweight, fast-absorbing, and easy to apply. And it left our oily skin looking glowy rather than greasy. According to our moisture meter, the gel boosted moisture in our skin by 1 to 15 percent, making us feel hydrated without any heaviness. And while we wouldn’t recommend it for dry skin, it’s great for oily and combination skin. It’s also fragrance-free and sensitive-skin-friendly. The reality is that tons of SPF products simply don’t layer well underneath makeup. Moisturizers with SPF are better for wearing under makeup than some traditional sunscreen formulas that can be stiff and cause pilling, but finding one that layers seamlessly underneath foundation takes some trial and error. We like this one because it was formulated with makeup application in mind. It works as a moisturizer, SPF, and makeup primer, and the emollient, easy-to-blend texture lends well to layering with other products.

We were also impressed with how fresh-faced and dewy we looked after every application. We usually need to tone down shine in our T-zone throughout the day, but we thought this moisturizer added just the right amount of glow that looked healthy and non-greasy. That being said, if you like your makeup to be matte or if you struggle with oily skin, this option may exacerbate the issue. We didn’t love the moisturizer’s floral fragrance and wished it were cruelty-free. But we’re still blown away by its budget-friendly price point. The moisturizer is one of the best buys on our list—even though it comes in a small 1.35-ounce tube. CeraVe's AM Facial Lotion With Sunscreen Works Double Duty Shiseido Hydrating Day Cream Broad Spectrum SPF 20 We can’t deny that its current price is a lot to spend on a 1.6-ounce moisturizer. But if you’ve struggled to find something that balances out your combination skin, this moisturizer may be worth the splurge.
