About this deal

They will firstly start walking down through the woodland where they meet the first three unicorns, they will spend some time brushing, asking questions and being told all about unicorns. Once they have all had a turn we continue down into the woodland where they then set off on a treasure hunt to find the fairy villages, make a wish on the wishing tree and spot all the naughty gnomes along the way. Settle down for bedtime with this brand new lift-the-flap adventure in the no.1 bestselling Ten Minutes to Bed series! The story is a little formulaic and clichéd(ie, the idea of Polly being sent to boarding school isn't exactly new territory)with some very long scenes involving the attempts to abduct the unicorn, and the script does have its ups and downs. And sometimes I worry that The Little Unicorn may be too old fashioned from an adult perspective. I wandered ahead of everyone else and quite suddenly a noise stopped me. It was something very close and very fast. I stood completely still as a creature as white as starlight bolted past me, almost close enough to touch. It was too little to be a horse, but seemed bigger than a deer, and it felt like it stepped out of thin air.

So the unicorn has had commercial value for centuries. Then as a medicinal panacea, now as body glitter and cuddly toys. Which seems a bit of a comedown for the noble creature. It was the pervy old Victorians who turned this sexy beast into a child’s fantasy. “They romanticised many of the bestiary images,” says Lawrence, “though the Victorians actually had unicorn porn, too.” In a time of Trump and terror, we’ve aligned ourselves with the unicorn – a symbol of hope The unicorn has also done its bit for the LGBT community in the last century. The rainbow flag was created by American artist Gilbert Baker in 1978 as a joyous symbol of the diversity of the gay community. It became prominent during the gay rights protests of the 1970s and 1980s. Rainbows and unicorns are so intrinsically linked (the association is also a Victorian invention) that it’s unsurprising that the magic creature started to appear on T-shirts and banners at Gay Pride around the world, with slogans such as “Gender is Imaginary” or “Totally Straight” emblazoned under sparkling rainbow unicorns. The sessions are a hour and half long, in this time the children are put into small groups where they will discover and make their way around three different areas of the magical woodland. That idea of openness to ideas, that you have to make a leap of faith in life to bond with a magical creature, is alluring. And it feels especially important now. Each era we create or revive myths to help make sense of the world. In recent times there have been vogues for aliens, zombies and vampires. But in a time of Trump and Brexit and terror, we’ve aligned ourselves with the unicorn – a symbol of hope and purity and strangeness. Robin obviously doesn’t understand the impact of Trump – or President Trunk as she calls him – but she realises the importance of believing that things will get better and the positive power of imagination. Robin is ill, the sort of ill where people never send her get well cards because they don’t think she will. She’s often in hospital hooked up to canulas, drips and oxygen. When she is, the best way to distract her is films and books. It was in hospital that she first watched Princess Unikitty, that we read Michael Morpurgo’s I Believe in Unicorns and read Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, in which Voldemort drinks unicorn blood to keep himself alive. This sense of magic, a belief that the extraordinary can happen in bad times is important to her and it’s important to us all.

I admit it, I liked this movie. Sure it does have its problems, but it is very well meaning and is in general amiable family drama. While it is uplifting on the whole, there are also some dark issues like the death of the mare and the cruelty inflicted onto the unicorn. And of course not forgetting their chance to ride a unicorn around the winding paths of the magical forest, spotting fairies, pixie villages and lots of other magical creatures along the way. For a moment I was too stunned to breathe and then I ran after it, seeing little flashes of white ahead of me, trying to keep it in sight as it wove through the woods. Then we came to a patch of woodland where the trees were clear and it was full of spring sunshine. In my memory the creature – the little horse or white stag – vanished into the sunlight. And I was certain that as it moved I caught a glimpse of a dagger-sharp horn.Weaving a journey from lively beginning to a gentle end, this gorgeous novelty board book is perfect for little ones winding down for bedtime. This extraordinary children's novel is the first in a fantasy series from debut author Annabel Steadman and has already gone global. In Skandar's world, not only are unicorns very real, but they're exceptionally deadly and can only be tamed by the rider that hatches them. This is a story that will enchant, excite, astonish and place unicorns firmly in the imaginations of a whole new generation of readers.

They come in a light grey colour or they can be pure white. They are very playful and they are funny, Unicorns walk very delicately because they don't want to step on flowers or insects or animals, because they like the flowers and the insects. It's not that I'm expecting to see one galloping through the midnight streets of south London. It's more that my childhood felt touched by their magic, for they've appeared in so many stories, in a myriad of different cultures throughout all of time. We could all describe one, without ever supposedly having encountered one.
