Slots are an impressive 4cm wide, narrowing to less than 2cm to grip toast. The Crumpet/Fruit Loaf button seems to be equivalent to everyone else’s bagel button. Has Sage done focus groups and decided that crumpets and fruit loaf are more popular? It heats just the middle elements.

A cable tidy on the underside is able to house a cable 1m in length from the controls end and 80cm from the other end. The Sage looks fantastic, but initially I wasn’t particularly impressed when slotting in the bread. The two slots aren’t quite long enough to hold a large slice of bread horizontally. This meant that it had to be placed in the toaster vertically. Would the top of the slice go unbrowned? Firstly, and most importantly, it makes perfect, evenly-toasted bread every time. Result! Browning controls are a slider, from 1-5 and anywhere in between. These apparently translate to 12 different levels of browning. The strip of lights above the give a visual indicator of how much time is left.

The Sage Smart Toast looks simple yet sophisticated with its solid brushed stainless steel design. Unlike other humongous, premium toasters, it's reasonably light and doesn’t take up heaps of kitchen counter space.The design is quite flexible. It looks best with the controls at the front, taking up a fairly narrow amount of worktop. But you could have the controls at the left or right and they’d still be usable. Maybe. The Sage is impressive – both in terms of gadgety features and even browning – but it’s pricey for a two-slot toaster, especially since those slots aren’t particularly generous in size.

If you want to keep the toaster in the cupboard, rather than on the worktop, the cable neatly stores underneath, keeping it organized and preventing any tangling. We reserve the right to refuse installation should our engineers think that the existing electrical or plumbing points are unsafe and in need of maintenance or if they are unable to install to existing furniture. I’ll keep this chapter relatively short because everything was pretty much a great success with this toaster. First and foremost, it toasted everything very evenly across the slice, though the inner heating elements do seem to be a bit hotter because one side of the bread was a little more browned than the other. Nevertheless, I call that a bonus because it gave me a choice of which side to butter.
