About this deal

The differences between a Japanese market version of this model and the international market version are minimal and only cosmetic. Throughout this review, I’ll note when there is an aspect unique to this Made in Japan model.

The mechanism within the watch is 4R36 automatic movement which is built in house and the calibre is comprised of 24 Jewels and a 41-hour power reserve. On the other hand, this makes for a rather rigid and bulky strap that can be uncomfortable to wear for an extended period of time. The “wave” design is iconic to Seiko dive watches and many collectors seek it out, however, I was not able to get over the discomfort factor in the time that I wore the SKX011.

NEW SEIKO 5 SPORTS ‘STEALTH’

All in all, the SKX011’s dial is not only quite handsome (in its own loud way) but also incredibly legible. Ultimately, Seiko designs watches intended to be functional, and legibility is indubitably one of the main concerns in a truly functional watch. With the SKX011J, Seiko takes it past simple legibility into handsome functionality that’s been proven over and over by this specific model’s commercial success. I’d like to meet the person who chose the design and materials for the Diver’s strap – and beat him with it until he confesses his allegiance to the JLSW (Japanese League of Sadistic Watchmakers). After looking into the watch design, quality, features, and pricing this watch received a 8.5/10 from us at The Watch Blog. Never mind. The Seiko Diver is a “fun” mechanical watch that’s not afraid of a bit of rough and tumble, priced to go. It’s kinda like a creamsicle that tells the time and doesn’t melt. Orange you glad I reviewed it? This timepiece is presented on a solid stainless steel jubilee bracelet that showcases both brushed and polished finishes. It fastens through the use of a fold over push deployment clasp. It also features a diver’s extension.

The unique bezel does a proper job of adding a bit of flash to an otherwise utilitarian timepiece. Surprisingly, this gold also pairs quite well with the bright orange dial. I’d have never guessed that gold and orange could look so good together but alas, it is true. Speaking of that dial… The bi-colour 24-hour bezel is coated in Hardlex, to ensure durability while the GMT hand improves practicality, visibility and legibility. The ‘beads of rice’ bracelet remains true to the SKX heritage with a ‘five-piece link’ design that forms a series of small X-shaped patterns. The Seiko Orange Monster. You may never have seen one, but it is the dive watch of choice for many watch enthusiasts. The distinctive ‘teeth’ markers and bright orange dial stand out amongst the conservative wristwatches worn by the majority of people. What is the Seiko Orange Monster like to live with? History of the Seiko Monster Watch The first generation Seiko Orange Monster First released in the 90s, the SKX Seiko 5 Sports watches were a modernised version of the classics – updating the reliability and durability of the 1960s originals. The 90s collection offered improved practicality – enhanced water resistance, strengthened crystals along with luminous hands and hour markers. These wearable, loveable values still stay strong in today’s modernised Seiko 5 Sports designs. Orange-dialed dive watches are so distinctive that they almost constitute their own genre. Largely dominated by Doxa and Seiko, over the years Bulova, Gruen, Timex and others have tried it out, but few major league brands have offered an orange dial. Most brands bring the safety-oriented color into their dive watches as markers, bands, chapter rings, bezel inserts and other accents. But Seiko and Doxa have unabashedly let their orange dials scream for decades, and, no matter how many decades go by, orange-dialed dive watches, in turn, scream “The 1970s.” An indelible mark of that era, the orange dial certainly gives the SPRB97 an anachronistic, pre-dive-computer vibe. Perhaps this ‘70s aura contributes to the sense that this watch is a reissue—though we’d have to concede that the first-generation orange Saumrai would also qualify. There are performance advantages to orange dials, including marginally better legibility at depth (though orange light is absorbed almost entirely when submerged to 50 feet). Orange is, however, easy to find in the shallows just off shore, should one plop it into the drink, though a more likely scenario would be locating the thing in the depths of a gear-laden duffle bag. But let’s be honest: most people wear dive watches as lifestyle accessories, so in a majority of instances the orange dial’s duties will end at grabbing people’s attention faster than a traffic cone. In my experience, the SRPB97 is a compelling conversation starter, even among those who aren’t interested in watches. The Seiko Orange Monster SKX781 is, without a doubt, a visually appealing timepiece that can easily catch the attention of everyone. Its sleek silver exterior and exceptionally bright orange dial create an ensemble that prioritises maximum legibility underwater. This colour combination also gives the Seiko Orange Monster a professional yet vibrant appeal that is very versatile, so that it stands out easily in a crowd and can elevate virtually any outfit, be it formal or casual. As one of the better dive watch options available on the market, you will certainly not regret adding this highly-functional and budget-friendly timekeeper to your watch collection. Up Close with the Seiko Orange Monster SKX781 Orange represents enthusiasm, fascination, happiness, creativity, determination, attraction, success, encouragement, and stimulation,” color-wheel-pro.com opines. “To the human eye, orange is a very hot color, so it gives the sensation of heat.” As a Seiko Diver-wearing Paris Hilton might say, that’s hot! It would appear that the watch has worked its way off the display cushion while in transit so I am very sorry for this. If the watch has been damaged by this we can arrange for it to be returned for a replacement. I can see from our system that this Seiko was delivered in to us from Seiko UK on Dec 2nd and is a brand new item. Please note that Seiko don't use as many covers as other watch manufacturers as they send them to us in bulk using polythene bags and the presentation boxes are sent separately. We then take the watch out of the polythene bag and put it on the display cushion in the official box before sending. We are also able to offer an exchange to a different product if required, please specify this when returning your product. In 1964, DOXA Watches sent divers into Switzerland’s Lake Neuchatel armed with a rainbow of brightly colored watches. Their goal: find the best hue for underwater visibility. Three years later, the watchmaker released the legendary orange SUB. If horological heritage is your bag, buy a latter day DOXA. If not, consider the Seiko Diver Automatic Orange Dial Men’s Watch. Now why would anyone want to do that?

The first Seiko watches to have a “Monster-like design” are two quartz watches, ref. SLR001 and SLR003, which were equipped with the 8F35 movement with perpetual calendar. We understand the importance of sizing the length of your watch bracelet or strap to provide the perfect fit. Our simple to use watch sizing guide allows you to measure the size of your wrist from the comfort of your own home. The strap of the Seiko Orange Monster is made of a strong stainless steel and measures 20mm in width. It fastens with a fold over style clasp that includes a safety catch. The strap can be replaced if you decide that’s something you would like to do.Unlike many automatic watches, this model comes with a Seconds-Stop function which allows the wearer to completely halt the movement within the watch. All in all, the Seiko Orange Monster SKX781 is undeniably one of the best and most legendary diver watches in Seiko’s catalogue. It is well-received not just for its quirky and vibrant dial, but also for its excellent depth rating and its incredibly sturdy, well-built structure. If you are looking for an iconic dive watch with unique styling, the Seiko Orange Monster SKX781 is definitely a worthy grab. Watch sizing can only be generally carried out on watches with metal bracelets, steel, titanium, gold, etc. One would expect a professional (commercial) diver’s watch to have a strong band that will not break easily even after hundreds of hours of use and countless impacts. The SKX011’s strap certainly meets these requirements.
