About this deal

In October 1965, Mongrédien published a review, in the journal La Revue des Deux Mondes, of the first edition of Pagnol's essay. At the end of this review, Mongrédien mentioned being told that the Archives of the Ministry of Defense located at the Château de Vincennes still held unsorted and uncatalogued bundles of Louvois's correspondence. He speculated that, if this were the case, then these bundles might contain a letter from July 1669 revealing the reasons for "Eustache Dauger "'s arrest near Dunkirk. [58] Modernisation of the archives [ edit ] I thought this book was going to be about Phillipe, the man in the iron mask and how he was being punished that way because the king Louis XIV wouldn't risk his royalty, and the battle to free him, something like that. The truth is this book was more about the musketeers and the man in the iron mask is only a subplot of it.

The king arrives and a great party is thrown. That evening D'Artagnan visits Aramis and attempts to question him regarding his suspicions about Fouquet's intentions in throwing the fete. D'Artagnan informs Aramis that he suspects that he is conspiring against the king but Aramis denies this, swearing on their friendship that he is not. D'Artagnan is satisfied and Aramis feels inwardly remorseful about lying to his friend. D'Artagnan leaves and this gives Philippe leave to emerge from his hiding place. Aramis tells Philippe that D'Artagnan is very loyal to the king but if he does find out about the switch later on he will keep his mouth shut because his Gascon pride will keep him from admitting he was deceived. The men then pull up one of the floorboards and look into the chamber below where the king is staying. Meanwhile, the struggle for power begins between Fouquet and Colbert. Louis attempts to impoverish Fouquet by asking for money to pay for a grand fête at Fontainebleau. Meanwhile, Aramis meets the governor of the Bastille M. de Baisemeaux, and learns of a secret prisoner who bears a striking resemblance to Louis XIV. Aramis uses this secret to persuade the dying general of the Jesuits to name him his successor. In the English translations, the 268 chapters of this large volume are usually subdivided into three, but sometimes four or even six individual books. In three-volume English editions the volumes are entitled The Vicomte de Bragelonne, Louise de la Vallière, and The Man in the Iron Mask. Each volume is roughly the length of the original The Three Musketeers (1844). Ravaisson, François, ed. (2012) [1st pub. 1866-1904]. Archives de La Bastille. Lang (1903) presented a theory that "Eustache d'Auger" was a prison pseudonym of a man called "Martin", valet of the Huguenot Roux de Marcilly. [18] After his master's execution in 1669, the valet was taken to France, possibly by abduction. A letter from the French Foreign minister has been found rejecting an offer to arrest Martin: He was simply not important. [19] a b Turan, Kenneth (March 13, 1998). "All in a Masquerade". I also wasn't impressed with the manner Dumas handled his three aging Musketeers. I was never fond of them. But they represented a certain dignity and fierce loyalty. This image was heavily mishandled and that somewhat ruined their characters. Was Dumas in a hurry to end their tale or was he too careless or too tired with them to care? My opinion is that he should have ended their long tale with more care and respect. Fabulous Librivox free audio book, read by Mark F. Smith. Amazing job! Different character voices, and narrated with plenty of passion and enthusiasm. Thank you so much!Historians point to two men as the most often suspected identities behind the iron mask: Ercole Matthiole and Eustache Dauger. The former was an Italian count who had betrayed Louis XIV politically in the 1670s. It has been decades since I read The Three Musketeers (this is my first reading of The Man in the Iron Mask) and it makes me want to reread it soon. FMCJ Awards".
