About this deal

Phew, I finally made it through this book! My apologies to everyone who loved this, but unfortunately, I did not, and no one's sadder than me. If you’re a fan of captivating and transporting historical fiction books similar to Where The Crawdads Sing, this book is a great choice. Like Delia Owens, Amor Towles is a master storyteller and you’ll find yourself lost in the story. A. No one from western NC talks like this. And Kya's father didn't move to the OBX until he was an adult, so he would still have his home dialect. Any student of language knows you don't shed and switch an accent easily once you're in adulthood. It takes practice. And even then the results are dodgy. Also this is not how Pamlico people speak anyway. See my rant about dialect above.

Alter, Alexandra (December 21, 2019). "The Long Tail of 'Where the Crawdads Sing' ". The New York Times . Retrieved July 21, 2022. As Kya grows and learns more about life through her interactions with the creatures of the Marsh, two young men enter her life. One is her brother's older friend, Tate, who teaches her to read and shows her acceptance and happiness. Another brings her hope of a future but won’t introduce her to his friends and family. Could one be her chance at happiness? A chance at belonging? A chance at being accepted? A chance at being loved? A Chance for growth? Or will history repeat itself? Recommended for readers who enjoy long, descriptive nature writing, and those who have no trouble suspending disbelief. If I had known these things before starting this book I would have skipped it, so perhaps my review will help other readers like me. She’d never gone to Colored Town, but knew where it was and figured she could find Jumpin’ and Mabel’s place once she got there.” Kya leaned closer to him, not enough to touch. But she felt a sensation – almost like the space between their shoulders had shifted. She wondered if [he] felt it. She wanted to lean in closer, just enough so their arms would gently brush together. To touch. And wondered if [he] would notice.Borys, Kit (July 21, 2020). " 'Where the Crawdads Sing' Movie Adaptation Finds Its Director". Hollywood Reporter. Archived from the original on March 2, 2021 . Retrieved December 30, 2020. If y ou’ve loved reading Kya’s story and looking for compelling books like Where the Crawdads Sing, you’ll love this post. When Chase Andrews, a young man from town, is found dead, Kya is a suspect. Did she do it? What happened? This was a book I didn’t want to end, although many times my heart ached for this precious little child/young woman alone in that desolate place. It is a heart-wrenching story, yet it’s also peppered with uplifting little nuggets just when you feel your heart breaking into tiny fragments from another of life’s bitter blows falling upon Kya’s scrawny shoulders. However, could I connect with a story of hardship, isolation, courage, endurance, and overcoming prejudices, then yes, I could. I love the stories of drive, strength, accomplishment and determination, despite the odds, and this book has it in abundance. A beautiful story told with so much heart.

I could easily write this entire review by simply using the copious examples of the gorgeous, sumptuous and sensual language of he novel. For me, it is this ability of the author that makes the difference in rating it with three stars or four (occasionally five) stars. If I love the language, I generally love the book. To get more government funding, the orphanage is now turned into a mental hospital. Because of this, all the orphans are announced as mentally ill. So the girls in the orphanage are not getting adopted anymore, including Elodie. ‘The Home for Unwanted Girls’ is a heartbreaking and suspenseful novel.Up until the story turns into a courtroom drama, this was a 5 star read for me. I absolutely loved the setting of the book. Owens completely brings the marsh to life, as well the community of Barkley Cove, such that it really did feel as if one was being transported away to another time and place. Owen's prose, especially when it comes to her lyrical descriptions of the natural world, are stunning, and whilst some readers might find aspects of the story slow, I personally found it the sort of book to be savoured, just for the way it was being told. Trending" 'crawdad' (2019-03-19)". Miriam-Webster News Trend Watch. Merriam-Webster, Incorporated. Archived from the original on November 17, 2019 . Retrieved April 18, 2020. Owens doesn't tell us what to think, but alludes to each message through writing so alive you can almost hear it breathing. She carries us through her dense, atmospheric tone and persuades us to seek and find; discover and examine, all on our own. Kya is a Marsh girl, deserted by her mother and left to a drunk and violent father, who eventually abandons her

To the reader who appreciates nature’s effortless beauty honored in fiction; to those who seek a love story every bit true as it is tender; to the one who needs a tantalizing murder/mystery to spice things up, and for those who tend to root for the underdog in hopes she’ll someday sparkle like the gem she is—this one’s for you. The first main element in the story is the descriptive Language, describing the natural surroundings of the pristine coastal marshland of North Carolina. Alternating between two timelines from 1939 to the present day this heartwarming story takes you to the lives of Rill Foss and her four younger siblings at the Tennessee Children’s Home Society orphanage. In the present day, we meet Avery Stafford who is living the dream.
