Lecoq (who had discovered gallium) came under severe criticism as several felt the he had pompously named the element after

The Platonic solids—the only geometric solids whose faces are composed of regular, identical polygons. (more)If a line segment intersects two straight lines forming two interior angles on the same side that sum to less than two right angles, then the two lines, if extended indefinitely, meet on that side on which the angles sum to less than two right angles. The different versions of the parallel postulate result in different geometries. With a wry sense of humour, Ken Robinson shows the urgent need to enhance creativity and innovation by thinking differently about ourselves. Above all, he inspires us to reconnect with our true self - it could just change everything. William Ramsay, the professor of chemistry at University College London, discovered five of the inert gases. Mathematician and historian W. W. Rouse Ball put the criticisms in perspective, remarking that "the fact that for two thousand years [the Elements] was the usual text-book on the subject raises a strong presumption that it is not unsuitable for that purpose." and how the slight lustre of it would focus the attention on the surrounding gemstones. Gold was seen as too flashy and silver had a Clay Mathematics Institute Historical Archive – The thirteen books of Euclid's Elements copied by Stephen the Clerk for Arethas of Patras, in Constantinople in 888 AD Wer schon einmal in seinem Leben Chemieunterricht hatte, kennt garantiert die große Tafel mit dem Periodensystem der Elemente, die wohl in jedem Chemiesaal an der Wand hängt, und während Sauerstoff, Eisen oder Gold jedermann ein Begriff sind, hat man sich in der einen oder anderen öden Unterrichtsstunde sicher schon mal gefragt, was genau eigentlich Ytterbium, Cadmium oder Neodym sein soll oder woher Antimon und Cer ihre merkwürdigen Namen haben. The thirteen volumes of Euclid’s “Elements” contains 465 formulas and proofs, described in a clear, logical style using only a compass and a straight edge, it contains formulas for calculating the volumes of solids such as cones, pyramids and cylinders. The books discuss perfect numbers and primes; proof and generalization of Pythagoras’ Theorem, Euclid proved that the diagonals of the regular pentagon cut each other in "extreme and mean ratio", which is now more commonly known as the golden ratio or golden section. The immense impact of the Elements on Islamic mathematics is visible through the many translations into Arabic from the 9th century forward, three of which must be mentioned: two by al-Ḥajjāj ibn Yūsuf ibn Maṭar—first for the ʿAbbāsid caliph Hārūn al-Rashīd (ruled 786–809) and again for the caliph al-Maʾmūn (ruled 813–833)—and a third by Isḥāq ibn Ḥunayn (died 910), son of Ḥunayn ibn Isḥāq (808–873), which was revised by Thābit ibn Qurrah (c. 836–901) and again by Naṣīr al-Dīn al-Ṭūsī (1201–74). Euclid first became known in Europe through Latin translations of these versions. Book 1 contains 5 postulates (including the infamous parallel postulate) and 5 common notions, and covers important topics of plane geometry such as the Pythagorean theorem, equality of angles and areas, parallelism, the sum of the angles in a triangle, and the construction of various geometric figures. Mr Aldersey-Williams’ writes for an adult, or interested teenager, audience, whereas I was reading Nechaev whilst still in primary (age 6-11) education. ‘Periodic Tales’ is wider, deeper, and longer; dipping into literature, mining, cookery, war, oceanography, classical history, Christianity, art, materials science, architecture …. That is by no means a comprehensive list. Louis Catrier changed the rules of high-society jewellery by using platinum as it was hard as opposed to gold and silver

a microscope was required to read it. He was also so secretive that he did not announce his discovery of palladium. Graphically stunning layouts feature each element's letter symbol and atomic number, exploring its attributes, characteristics, uses, and interesting stories behind its discovery. Complete with a comprehensive introduction, conclusion, and glossary, this is the perfect introduction to chemistry for inquisitive minds. The author tried unsuccessfully to obtain a sample of plutonium and relates an amusing story where he found something called homeopathic plutonium, but on looking into it realized that, like most homeopathic ‘treatments,’ it actually contains none of the actual ingredient. Instead, homeopathy is based on the premise that certain molecules retain the ‘memory’ of their having once been associated with something else, and if that sounds ridiculous, well, it is. In his 2013 book The Unpersuadables, Will Storr includes a discussion of homeopathic remedies: Ja lasītājs neko no šī temata iepriekš nebūs daudz lasījis, tad šī grāmata viņam būs īsta zināšanu krātuve. Man šāda doma galvā iešaujas laiku pa laikam, bet pagaidām esmu tam turējies pretī.

An extremely enjoyable book. To date it’s the closest I’ve found to one of my absolute favorite childhood books, passed down to me, long since mislaid; the title and author of which I cannot remember. That book had a red cover. Inside there were the most marvelous stories of the discovery of (amongst others) the composition of air (Scheele, Cavandish, Lavoisier), the alkali-earth metals (Davy), and helium (Kirchoff & Bunsen) in our Sun. Wilson 2006, p.278 states, "Euclid's Elements subsequently became the basis of all mathematical education, not only in the Roman and Byzantine periods, but right down to the mid-20th century, and it could be argued that it is the most successful textbook ever written." Book 13 constructs the five regular Platonic solids inscribed in a sphere and compares the ratios of their edges to the radius of the sphere.
