About this deal

Compressed air is always looking for a way out (or in). It wants to be equal with the outside/inside pressure. For the average stand-up paddle boarder, there are no real practical benefits to inflating a paddle board to greater than 15-18 psi. Although higher pressure can make a paddle board stiffer and more rigid, it can also damage your board. And, finally, just in case I develop a liking for manual SUP over inflation, we’ll find out whether it’s true. Is it possible to over inflate and burst your sup board apart like an expensive balloon? The exact boundaries between the different board types are always debated. Therefore, consider the following numbers as guidelines:

Bluefin recommend 15-18 psi on their cruiser range – max 28psi. 12-15 psi on their all round range – max 25 psi. There are, of course, large, really high-quality boards with outstanding stiffness, such as the large Bluefin Cruise (Carbon) models (12′ or 15′) or also the Skinfox Whale. However, these clearly go in the direction of “high-priced”. If that is within the scope for you, you are certainly well served. All of that, alongside the price, mean this isn’t a paddleboard for beginners but for experienced paddlers who are looking for top speeds in waves or flat water. Despite the thin profile and fast design, it’s also known for solid stability. Beyond performance in the water, the SIC has nice touches including easy-to-grab handles and a bungee strap for essentials closer to the middle of the board. The difference in stiffness and rigidity between a paddleboard inflated to 15 psi and one inflated to 25psi is apparently negligible.

Storage is another key consideration. Stand-up paddle boards are long and bulky, so think about where you’ll keep it and how you’ll transport it to the water. If you’re short on space, an inflatable paddle board may be a better idea. How do you choose a paddle? The Advantage of Sailor Inflatable Paddle Board: Goosehill Sailor is an ultra-lightweight inflatable SUP board. Measuring 10'6''*32''*6'' and weighing 20.5LBS, it's light, fast and well suited to all kinds of popular SUP activities like racing or cruising on a quiet lake, the ocean or down a calm river. After your SUP pump gauge reaches 8 psi, pumping up an inflatable paddle board by hand gets a little tough. So tough, in fact, that my kids just give up and cheer me on. And those last 15-20 pumps to get it to the just the right pressure… For a racing paddleboard, the Bluefin Sprint Carbon got a relatively wide shape. At a width of 30 inches (77 cm), the board is the slimmest. Therefore, it’s quite easy to control in the water.

Size and air pressure (referred to as PSI) will contribute to how much weight the paddle board can easily support. Make sure you consider potential passengers, not just yourself. If you’re sporty, plan on longer trips from the start, or already have experience with paddle boarding, you’re better off with a touring board. These boards are longer and often have a narrower build. Touring boards also have a sportier shape with a tapered nose. This design reduces water resistance and that makes for faster speeds. Of course, cost always plays a role. However, it is important to note that inflatable paddle boards (iSUPs) now make up the majority of all paddle boards sold. The exact share of sales is not known, but is already between 95 and 98% according to different estimates. But is it all actually necessary? Do you really have to pump your iSUP up all the way to its recommended psi figure? If so why? And who decided on that number anyway? Touring boards are longer, at upwards of 12 feet in length, and have a larger volume,” says paddle board coach Jo Taylor. “They’re intended for exploring and adventures where you can put lots of equipment on your board and take it with you on your journeys.
