About this deal

Any metals on the bases were done in Balthazar Gold or Leadbelcher depending on whether they were ornamental or industrial, and washed/drybrushed appropriately. Finally, the bases themselves were painted with two thin coats of Zandri Dust, ready for PVA and sand. With that, the models were complete! This gold metallic is so easy to use, it’s almost cheating. If anything, my only qualm with this gold metallic is that it might be too bright and shiny to be realistic. Base: The armor/carapace/face and gun housing were all based with a mix of German Grey with little bit of Dark Prussian Blue mixed in for a bit of tint- in the range of 10-20%. I don’t think this is strictly necessary, how blue you want it (if at all) is up to personal taste.

The product is named Metal Color (No U) – However, throughout the article, I will default to my native spelling “Colour” unless I am specifically mentioning the product itself. Please feel free to berate me for the few instances I am likely to have gotten this wrong. Whether is due to how they were shipped (e.g., maybe stored in an area that is too cold), or another unknown reason, it is annoying. The metallic is pre-thinned for airbrushing, but is amiable to regular brush application techniques. Dispense onto your palette and it’s ready to go. For monopose models where it’s important to keep parts together, but I still want to do clipping and cleaning of plastic in a batch, I tend to flip the bases upside down and keep the parts together in those once they’re cleaned. The Gathering Storm I and Shield of Baal campaign books from late 7th edition both feature Necrons in key roles working with the Imperium to protect key worlds from threats that they’d rather not deal with themselves. In Gather Storm, Trazyn works with Cawl and Imperial forces to stop Abaddon and in Shield of Baal Anrakyr works with the Blood Angels and the Mephrit dynasty to fend off a Tyranid invasion. In their earliest incarnations, Necrons were a simpler force, consisting primarily of robots clad in metal bodies with little adornment. As the faction has been revised, they’ve become more elaborate, and subfactions that call for different color schemes have emerged, creating a good deal of variety in the way you can paint them. The only things I’ve used which are even on par with these are solvent-based products like the Vallejo Liquid Metal range. Which are alcohol-based. The color is bright and highly-reflective. It’s closes competitor is the slightly brighter (more “silvery”) Citadel Stormhost Silver. On a smooth surface, the final dried metallic is like a bright polished steel or even aluminum. There is something about an alcohol-based formula that produces a metallic finish that is bright and magnificent. This is probably because the alcohol vehicle allows the manufacturer to use pigments with highly reflective metal ingredient, which can usually be prone to oxidation.

But it’s an important note, if you spell Colour the way I do, you may not find this stuff on some of your favourite hobby stores if you search for it with a U! Vallejo Metal Color Review – Summary With my basic level of intelligence, I’m sure there is some kind of heat treatment or something you could apply to aluminium to make it darker. But I’ve no idea if it’s actually possible to make aluminium actually change hue. I love the ostentatious colour scheme of the Nihilakh Dynasty, not afraid to show off their riches on even the lowliest Necron Warrior. The green is the part that takes the longest on my models. For this, I use the following paints in successive, very thin layers, building up the intensity through successive layers : Caliban Green, Warpstone Glow, Moot Green, Yriel Yellow and finally Skull White. Make sure you let each layer dry before moving onto the new one. I reached out to Vallejo to ask whether they were thinking of expanding this range (for reasons I get to in this section) and they said no, not at this time.
