About this deal

Smith was posted to 151 squadron flying Hurricane fighters in July 1940, and was soon involved in the Battle of Britain. On August 15, he shot down two Messerschmidt Bf-109E fighters and damaged a third. Other victories followed in August and October. In November, 151 squadron, flying Hurricanes and Defiant fighters, was re-deployed on night operations against the Luftwaffe's night blitz on British cities. Smith was promoted to the rank of flight commander, and in March 1941 was awarded a DFC. In July, flying a Defiant, he destroyed a Dornier Do-217 bomber and damaged a Junkers Ju88 off Cromer. Mizoram, nestled in the northeastern part of India, had been marred by insurgency and separatist movements for years. The Mizo National Front (MNF), led by Laldenga, was at the forefront of the secessionist movement, demanding an independent state of Mizoram. The region had become a hotbed of insurgency, leading to significant unrest and challenges for the Indian government. Operation Jericho Timeline

The keys to resolving why the prison was bombed may well have been the arrest by the Gestapo of the Vice-Prefecture of Abbeville, Raymond Vivant. Did he know anything about the plans for D-Day? Vivant may well have been privy to some aspects of ‘Operation Fortitude’ – the Allied plan to convince the German High Command that the Allied invasion would be in the Pays de Calais and not Normandy. It was known that the Gestapo used whatever they thought was needed to get information, including the torture of family members. A secret RAF document found after the war stated: Outraged by this, the MNF leadership decided to launch ‘ Operation Jericho’ to take control of Aizawl and overran Aizawl in a few days’ time (in late February).Taken from Mosquito SB-F (F-Freddie, W/Cdr Bob Iredale and F/Lt J. [g] No one had imagined that the Union government would bomb its own territory. “It took us by surprise that the government had the courage to deploy jet fighters to bomb Aizawl that it dared not fly inside China or Pakistan,” said Remruata, a village council member. “Well, charity begins at home.” June 30, 1971: Laldenga was captured by the Indian authorities, dealing a significant blow to the MNF leadership. The French resistance did not request the bombing, nor did they transmit any information about the prison until asked for it by the British.

Under the leadership of Brigadier Rustom Zal Kabraji, ground operations were initiated to reclaim rebel-held positions. Kabraji commanded the 61 Mountain Brigade, stationed in Agartala, and spearheaded these efforts. Despite attempts to resupply the Assam Rifles battalion through helicopter missions, the tenacious rebel opposition resulted in the downing of several supply flights. The ground operations encountered substantial resistance, necessitating several days of intense engagement before reaching the city of Aizawl. Some—as many as 100—changed clothes in commercial vans thoughtfully parked for the purpose. Prisoners helped each other without distinction as to which side of the prison they came from. There were no criminals running from the building, no political prisoners, only Frenchmen. Some stripped guards’ bodies of their uniforms, becoming instant Germans. One, equipped with a white cane, tapped his way to freedom as a “blind man.” A photo taken two days later shows damage to prison including a hole in the perimeter wall (right-of-centre). Thompson, H.
