About this deal

The Roccbox’s Wood Burner 2.0, while efficient at its job, comes with a steeper learning curve and is more difficult to use for beginners. It requires very specific sized wood chunks that must be loaded into a small slot. Many users find this difficult and time consuming, and we agree. The burner has a basket which you can pull in and out as you add wood and a tool which allows you to do that safely. I added wood every 3-4 minutes, and at around the 40-minute mark, the oven was hot enough to use. There aren't many electric pizza ovens around that are for use at home, but the Ooni Volt 12 and Sage Pizzaiolo are examples that might be a good fit for those who are keen to cook artisan-style pizza without the need for outdoor space.

I know it's rare, but the idea that you can actually 'set up in minutes' is actually, for once, true. Unlike some of the best BBQs, this is an outdoor buy that takes hardly any preparation if you're hosting a garden party. Using the gas burner to make pizza Least expensive, smaller pizza stone, multi-fuel options including wood and gas, barebones in terms of extras, less insulation These are made to sit on top of a gas or charcoal barbecue, and are usually made up of a simple metal box with a pizza stone inside. They heat up from below using the barbecue grill.

This can result in pizzas with very crispy bases and underdone tops. You might need to use a pizza peel to hold your pizza aloft in the oven for a while to help the top catch up with how well done the base is. Electric pizza ovens Ease of build and use: We timed how long it took to build the oven and rated the instruction manual. We then assessed how easy it was to use the oven. The traditional and most popular type. They require the most patience and skill, as they usually take longer to get up to temperature than gas, and need almost constant attention to get the flames to the right size and consistency. Overall, the Ooni Karu 16 is a superior pizza oven compared to the Gozney Roccbox. It has a newer design, more features, and a much bigger baking surface. That said, the Karu 16 costs significantly more than the Roccbox. They're often able to cook up a range of different pizza types and require very little tending unlike those that cook with an open flame.

The extra weight on the Roccbox comes from the dense insulating layers that help the oven retain heat. This is a nice feature, but for most pizza makers, extreme heat retention isn’t a huge concern. We found that the Ooni Koda’s L-shaped flame cooked pies more evenly and required less turning than the Gozney Roccbox —plus, its larger cooking area means you could make bigger pizzas, should you so desire. Both ovens were able to turn out beautifully charred, evenly cooked pizzas in only 2-3 minutes, but the Ooni’s L-shaped flame gives it the ever-so-slightest edge. First, you should compare the dimensions of the oven you're interested in with the size of your barbecue – you won't get far if your grill isn't big enough for the oven to sit snugly.Less expensive, similar pizza stone size, multi-fuel options including wood and gas, more feature rich, newer

Propane burns hotter than butane and is therefore the preferred gas for use with pizza ovens. The majority are propane-only, but some work with butane too. Wood-fired pizza ovens The Ooni Koda 12 is the smaller version of the Ooni Koda 16. It compares favorably against the Roccbox in terms of convenience and weight, being an exclusively propane fueled pizza oven with less insulation. We’re not going to focus on which portable pizza oven makes the best pizza for this review. That might seem odd, but both Ooni and Roccbox are premium pizza oven brands with excellent build quality, so it’s a given that both make great pizza. That said, most pizza makers are looking for a balance of performance and convenience. The Ooni Koda 16 is more convenient to use than the Roccbox because it runs exclusive only propane with precise temperature control. Also, the Koda 16’s propane burner cooks more efficiently and evenly due to its innovative “L-Shaped” design, as you can see in the pictures below. Storage: consider the space you have available. The smallest pizza ovens we've tested are the BBQ-top models, which thanks to their small, boxy size, can easily be stored in a garage, shed or even inside somewhere. A number of the models on this list have easy foldaway legs, meaning they too will take up very little room when not in use. Some of the larger models we've tested will need to be kept outside in all weathers, in this case, a cover is an absolute must.

While we prefer some features over others, our experiences with both Ooni and Roccbox (Gozney) have overall been positive. Both brands are well respected, highly trustworthy companies with robust warranty programs and great customer service. Compared to the Gozney Roccbox, the Ooni Karu 12G doesn’t retain heat as efficiently, but it’s still more than adequate for the average pizza maker’s needs. In fact, our tests show that it’s better than average compared to other similar pizza ovens. While Ooni is generally the preferred brand due to having more options, Roccbox vs other pizza oven brands compare quite favorably. Roccbox is the easy winner between Roccbox vs the Bertello or the Roccbox vs the Pi Solo Stove, for example. Also, both Ooni and Gozney are based in the UK, so you can expect good customer service as well as high-quality design standards. I’m confident that whichever pizza oven you choose, you will have a good experience dealing with either company from a customer service perspective. Ooni Has Better Options for New York and New Haven style Pizza The additional Roccbox Cover, which is fantastic for keeping Roccbox secure and snug in all sorts of weather, has a carry strap incorporated. Can I cook in Roccbox?Instead, we’re going to focus on what matters most to pizza makers: price, fuel choice, and convenience. With this knowledge, hopefully you can make the most informed choice with either Ooni or Roccbox. Pros and Cons For Buying Ooni or Roccbox They often take up a lot of kitchen counter space, though, and cooking at such high temperatures can still have smoky results and be problematic when cooking indoors.
