Pulp Fiction : The Facts – Documentary (30:31) is a retrospective feature covering the origins of the film as well as how Quentin Tarantino broke into the business with Reservoir Dogs. It also features interviews with others involved with the production. Known for its relentlessly quotable dialogue - rich with razor-sharp wit and incessant pop culture references - for its iconic characters and unforgettable shots; and for its stunning blend of striking, unflinching violence, and ironic humour; for its non-linear narrative and the distinctive style pervading throughout, Pulp Fiction ushered in a new era of crime dramas, with endless imitators but no equals, even from Tarantino himself. Quentin Tarantino isn’t exactly the one-man Hollywood New Wave that some fans would like to believe, but he’s certainly a cinematic wunderkind, whose splashy debut recalls the likes of Orson Welles and Citizen Kane. It’s been widely reported that Tarantino plans to make just one more film and call it quits. For a while, he was circling around a Star Trek sci-fi/gangster project, though that’s since fallen by the wayside. If one looks for genres he hasn’t yet honored, plenty remain to be explored— kaiju films, classic monsters, Hollywood musicals, screwball comedies. But for all the entertainment value that he’s provided over the years, Tarantino hasn’t truly surprised cinephiles since Pulp Fiction. So here’s hoping that he drops the mic with something genuinely unexpected.

Paramount's SteelBook is glossy and will show some handling fingerprints. The front panel is predominately red at the top where the film's title in Hands down, this is the best Pulp fiction has looked on home video. Kudos to Paramount Home Entertainment. Hopefully we can expect more of this type of support of the Ultra HD releases from their extensive catalog. While Pulp Fiction isn’t a masterpiece of filmmaking as some might contend, it’s still a very well made picture with the sharp writing we expect from Tarantino and one of the better ensemble casts put together. This is a genre film that strives to recreate the look and feel of director Quentin Taratino’s vision. Reminiscent of the better catalog release offerings that have come to Ultra HD Blu-ray, this rendering represents faithful reproduction bumped to the next level. Pulp Fiction has never made for a commanding visual experience on home video but, that was always sort of a given determined by the cinematography and the elements necessary to convey the film’s tone. If you already have the bluray and are not a fan (per se) then I can image you will be perfectly fine without this new release. Don't misunderstand me: the 4k isn't bad at all, the bluray is just already very good. However only the 4k has the special features mentioned above.

If you are a tarantino fan you probably dont need to read this review - except to waste some time while you wait for your 4k bluray to arrive. You are a fan? Self-preservation is an instinct you possess? You are getting this new release and you will be happy. It's some gourmet shit. Pulp Fiction arrives on 4K Ultra HD for the first time and, apparently, approved by Tarantino, though I often wonder if it’s a matter of watching one shot and calling it good. Whatever the case, this 2160p high-definition transfer does look great and a decent upgrade over the previous Blu-ray release. Detail is well defined and colors appear well balanced. Watching I didn’t notice any significant or obvious signs of artifacts, aliasing or other flaws. Their hilariously mundane conversation may have convinced America’s action film devotees that good dialogue actually makes a difference — Tarantino’s speeches veer between Shakesperian oratory and the best of sitcom bandinage . . . plus the kind of 100-proof profanity that would stop grandma’s heart dead cold.The 4K disc has languages in English, German, Italian, French and Japanese (just like old times) and subtitles in those languages plus Dutch and Korean. The Blu-ray disc has only English audio and Spanish subs. It might actually be an older disc — the menus are different, and it uses an older Lionsgate Logo. A Digital Code is enclosed in the metallic clamshell Steelbook. To be kind, John Travolta had never been a favorite actor, and the early ’90s were not good for him — his previous films were an installment of the Look Who’s Talking series, and a cameo in Boris and Natasha . Like a cat with multiple lives, Travolta reignited his career for the third time. Independent Spirit Awards (11:29) and Cannes Film Festival: Palme D’or Acceptance Speech (5:20; SD) just shows off the accolades Pulp Fiction received via these award ceremonies. Pulp Fiction arrives 4K at last, with a freshly remastered scan of the original camera negative, complete with Dolby Vision and standard HDR. Paramount Home Video’s 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray + Digital Code Steelbook of Pulp Fiction 4K didn’t let me down — the older Blu-rays were fine but this 4K do-over pops with color and sharpness. The razor-keen banter still keeps us at attention; QT’s dialogue seldom feel false or shows its age. Is it because he has us off-balance most of the time?

There was no need to worry though, as Tarantino’s second film, Pulp Fiction, was a huge box office and critical hit, and cemented his place as one of the most talented and important American film makers of the modern era, something he has reminded us of with each of his subsequent films. QT wasn’t some crazy rebel filmmaker. He established himself as an old-fashioned auteurist, and demonstrated considerable loyalty to his creative contributors. Co-writer Roger Avary had assisted on Reservoir Dogs . The same went for Tarantino’s ace editrix Sally Menke, producers Lawrence Bender & Richard N. Gladstein, cinematographer Andrzej Sekula, & costumer Betsy Heimann. Quentin Tarantino, love him or loathe him, is a talented writer and fine director with a few solid films under his belt. Reservoir Dogs introduced the world to Tarantino’s unique dialogue followed by this 1994 gem, Pulp Fiction which accomplished a few things including reigniting John Travolta’s slugging career and showing that Tarantino was hardly a flash in the pan writer/director.Audio: English (DTS-HD MA 5.1), German (DTS-HD MA 5.1), Italian (Dolby Digital 5.1), French (Dolby Digital 2.0), Japanese (Dolby Digital 2.0)

Ving Rhames’ Marcellus is the common thread between the stories, a gangster so fearful nobody dares offend him. Jules and Vincent never forget that fact, which makes Vincent’s screwy ‘date assignment’ for their boss all the funnier. Marcellus’ wife Mia wants a fun night out, and Vincent is delegated to entertain her. He’s in double jeopardy — if the frisky Mia tries to seduce him, he’s cooked. Mia is also a sneaky cokehead. Keeping her away from drugs may be impossible. I love Pulp Fiction for its rich, eclectic dialogue, ironic use of humor, and wonderfully infused pop culture references. The characters are built upon typical criminal archetypes but, are grounded by an enriching level of humanity as seen through the various conversations/monologues and pitch perfect interaction. This is where the film’s best and funniest moments reside. Pulp Fiction is most decidedly a classic film but, depending on who you talk to, the reaction to it isn’t in line with what we envision when we think of a true “classic”. Be that as it may, there is no doubt that writer/director Quentin Tarantino got it right. Among my favorite films, I love it for its rich, eclectic dialogue, ironic use of humor, and wonderfully infused pop culture/references, that combine with its edgy neo-noir, to make for one of the most entertaining films of the nineties.

If what’s wanted for Ultra HD is a ’90s hit, this is a likely candidate fer sher . . . Quentin Tarantino’s epic-length crime ‘meditation’ won over most of its audience. Its extreme scenes make sense, and the tone is sharp and funny. There’s no denying that QT was in full command of his filmmaking, putting exactly what he wanted on the screen. The rears are alive much of the time, especially during the dance scene and the scenes in the diner. Dialogue is perfectly intelligible, even during Bruce Willis' whispered lines. Gunshots sound a bit tinny, but they've always sounded that way. Actually, the gunshots in 'Pulp Fiction' sound much more realistic than they do in other movies. When Jules lays into his Biblical verses the entire soundstage quakes. The crescendo of his prophetic voice fills the room. LFE has its moments, and when called upon offers a resonate force of bass. Siskel & Ebert’s “At the Movies”: The Tarantino Generation (16:00) has the former dynamic critic duo talking about how the writer/director has possibly influenced other filmmakers. Quentin Tarantino juggles cultural connections and nostalgic touchstones as can nobody else. Travolta dancing the Batusi sends a jolt of recognition to every audience member over a certain age. The subtle minutia visible in the clothing and facial features among the members of the cast was striking. Grain remains intact, with an even and, primarily filmic essence, that underscores the thematic content. The color range in the film is surprisingly broad and, the rendering of both primary and secondary colors proves gratifying and contrastingly vivid. I also found that fleshtones appeared gradational and quite natural.
