There’s a whole world of pillow fillings out there, so we’ve summarised the pros and cons of the various types below. Another appealing feature is the amount of choice you get when it comes to size and feel. It’s available in soft, soft/medium and medium/firm variants, as well as standard (50 x 75cm), superking (50 x 90cm) and square (65 x 65cm) sizes. Pure feather pillows – as luxurious as the idea of pure feathers may sound, we’d avoid this type as those pesky feather quills seem to have a way of escaping and stabbing you in the face. It’s also worth noting they don’t offer the support and height needed for side sleepers. Plus, they can be noisy and don’t suit allergy sufferers.
The cover layer of the Silentnight Just Like Down pillow is made from microfibre. This is a form of polyester which is super soft to touch but also very durable. Giving the pillow a soft feel greatly adds to the comfortable feel of the pillow and you relax in an enjoyable sleep environment. A bonus of using this material is that it is easy to keep clean. The cover is not removable but it does not need to be as the full pillow can be machine washed. Keeping the pillow clean and hygienic will help it keep its shape for longer. 2. Down Like Eco Fibre Layer For this test we worked our way through a constant rotation of new pillows, looking for those that helped us sleep better. The first thing we learned is that material is a key factor. Broadly speaking, there are five types that you need to know about: washable cotton, luxurious down, memory foam for support, modern microfibre and hybrids of two or more of those. The only significant caveat is that to keep the pillow feeling its best, you’ll need to plump it up daily – something that’s not necessary with the foam pillows in this list. If you have sensitive skin, this could be the pillow for you, as it is OEKO-TEX certified free from irritants and chemicals, and the soft, smooth bamboo cover is naturally antimicrobial.Front sleepers, also called stomach sleepers, best suit a medium-firm or firm pillow with a low loft to ensure the spine is kept in alignment. Memory foam or hybrid pillows can provide that kind of support.
