About this deal

Who remembers the Domino Club on Grey Mare Lane? Some fantastic acts on there including James Brown and 'Little' Stevie Wonder. The Hollies were always on as were Syd and Eddie (Little and Large).

They owned the Clayton ballroom, and ran the roller-skating on Wednesday nights, and the dances on Friday, and Saturday nights. The Domino was really a great place to be on a weekend top bands good beer and lovely girls. Alan (pancho}Bramwell -15/11/13 One night in late 60s we saw a band called The Government.Brilliant singer, David Coverdale, who later joined Deep Purple. Michael -20/7/11 Then there was the Saturday afternoon kid dances. This was the highlight of my younger days. Me and my good friends, Peter Hall, Eric Emmerson, Robie (David Robertson) used to go and they used to have a dance competition every Saturday and I used to dance my heart out and used to win all the time and the girl who ran it used to give me a box of chocolates and would ask me for a kiss when she gave me the chocolates. That was the best, I loved it. CYMPIL IF YOU CAN REMEMBER HER NAME CAN YOU PLEASE PRIVATE MESSAGE ME WITH HER NAME. THE GIRL WHO USED TO RUN THE DANCES..????? and I'll fill you in more then......You will be quite surprised....LOL...Then we moved to Canada in 1973.I went to the club in 1958 onwards. I also worked on the conversion from a cinema to the great club it was. I live in alice street just down the road.Ronny Moss was the owner he started a Sunday football team which my mate and I were players. The Houghton's had a Son,[adopted?..not clear on that one,but he lived with them, and was brought up by them,in the big trailer,[showman's 'van]. My parents met here, my late father Bill Waterhouse was a waiter here, with another man called Roland Marks ( whom would later become his best man). It would have been around 1959/ 1960, my dad was former Royal Navy, originally from Portsmouth, he was a real character and sadly missed, ( like so many of his era he could have done stand up comedy,) he was so observational, a very funny man, with a life experience from sailingthe world! A small barber shop in a covered shopping arcade is the unlikely and well disguised entrance to one of Leeds’, and indeed the UK’s best bars. The dark suited burley doorman is the most unlikely looking hairdresser so something of a giveaway as to the bar’s location. The Vibrations (plus 7 great acts, one of which I think was The Noblemen with Martin Barre on guitar pre-Jethro Tull). After this show, straight to Princess Club, Chorlton.

Before it was the Domino Club, it was the Princess Picture House.I lived 5 mins round the corner in Marthe Street. The shop next door was Quarmby's sweet shop and behind it was the Travelers Caravan Park.I remember when it closed down.I was not old enough to drink but my brother John went nearly every night "tart hunting" as he called it. The Domino Club is the latest opening from the folk behind Roland’s, and their latest venture is even more interesting than their first… Great club, great nights.Met my 1st husband there and dragged him along anywhere Billy Furywas playing. So what can you expect, once you’ve found your way inside? Well, it may be new, but it doesn’t look it. They’ve given the venue a timeless feel that will fits the concept perfectly – think parquet flooring, rich wood panelling and delicate glass pendant lights, alongside leather booths and a handmade brass bar top. It’s not all old school though, they’ve thrown a few curve balls in their with the neon lights and the beatnik inspired uniforms. Hi Symptoms, the big trailer 'van was owned by John and Amy Houghton who designed and built the "Astronaught" elevating fairground ride, which was based at the Spanish City, for years, until John sold it.Yes - hired a coach from Halifax for my 21st, Sid and Eddie were on. They also had a little monkey that you could have your photo taken with, Happy days. Daphne Murphy -25/11/10 It took months and months for her to come to terms with it,She was just over 16 yrs old,and I was 17 yrs old.

Me being a tee-totaller,I only went ti the Domino ti see "The Ivy League","Troggs","Los Zafiros",Toby Twirl,[Davy Holland ..[Holly]...from Blyth..],and other great groups..,so I cannot comment on the beer!! The club was run by Vera and Ronnie Moss. Ronnie and Dennis were joint owners with their parents' part of the Moss empire. The head bouncer was Harry Johnson.I remember passing the Domino Club on the 53 bus on my way home from work 1969/70 and there was a group playing there called Johnny Ball and the Four Skins ,I couldn't stop laughing I was only 16/17 so still had a schoolboy humour, the rest of the passengers didn't seem so amused. Paul Hopkinson -26/9/11 The Astronaught ride had a big press review at the time, cos it was unique, the first in the world, and everybody wanted to copy it...[probably did,as time went by...this was in the 60's if i'm not going senile...!!]

I remember the resident trio The Jeff Set with a great sax. Also saw The Move singing Flowers in the rain, late 60s I think. The Coasters (with The Noblemen featuring Martin Barre on guitar) on 20 November 1966. Straight on to Princess Club in Chorlton. Club Domino, my favorite subject as a few people on here already know. Right I'll start at the beginning. As a little kid aged 6 or 7 my Aunt came from Co Durham and took me and my two sisters to see a movie at the Wallaw. I think the movie was "The Great St Trinian's Train Robbery" Only movie I ever saw there. Then the place closed and was remodeled to be The Domino as we called it. Big night club that was just up the street from where we lived as I lived at 15 Kings rd. My Mom & Dad used to go there all the time. The space we found in the Grand Arcade is unique in the city and fits in with our concept perfectly,” Jonathan explained. “By having a small shop front on the street level and the large space underneath we were able to partner up with Lords Barbering and give that classic feeling of a hidden club behind the barbers.” Originally it was called The Prince's Cinema which had opened in 1915 as The King George's Picture House. In 1930 it became The Prince's Cinema which closed on Saturday, October 28, 1961 with a Walt Disney double bill; 'The Absent-Minded Professor' and The Housemasters.' It then became the nightclub named The Domino Club.
