About this deal

How the materials affected a beverage's taste: We tried different beverages to see if the tumblers' materials affect taste, including plain water, juice, smoothies, and coffee. Now that you know some pros and cons, let's talk about what Beast and Yeti tumblers have in common. For starters, the pricing is typically the same; Yeti and Beast tumblers have a variety of sizes ranging up to 32 ounces. Pelican is a company that makes quality flight cases for sensitive equipment, and in many ways they’re like YETI: a small company who established a niche with a specific product, then started building a brand around it. This tumbler is a bit different than the rest, and if you love the screw-on lid with the bigger spout area it’s a good buy. The price of this tumbler is high, and it doesn’t keep your drink any hotter or colder than others.

The Yeti's plastic lid will sometimes form condensation on it depending on the type of drink you put in it. While this isn't necessarily a bad thing at first, it can prove damaging to the plastic lid, and the rubber rings, in the long run. If moisture is allowed to rest on it, mold and mildew could start to grow. If you love drinking through a straw, the Klean Kanteen Insulated is the tumbler for you. While many tumblers offer a straw lid option, this one is our favorite both to use and to clean. The stainless steel straw turns to bendy silicone just above the lid, allowing you to handily bend it to drink, just like your favorite childhood plastic version. Around the base of the straw, a silicone seal does an astonishingly good job of preventing nearly all spills — we had to slosh it vigorously at a 90-degree angle to get even the smallest drop to squeeze through. That silicone seal also pops out for easy cleaning but remains attached, so you won't lose it.The big difference with a tumbler is the lid. While a travel mug is still designed for easy-access sipping, many tumblers don’t have any kind of stopper at all to slow down your sipping pleasure. The lids are simple and easy to clean, but they offer far less insulation than good travel mugs. The best travel mugs keep your coffee hotter and your laptop (not to mention pants) safer from spills.

Cleaning these tumblers and lids was easy, even by hand. Compared to popular travel mugs like the Contigo – West Loop with its springs and levers on the inside of the lid, a tumbler lid is dead simple to clean. These mugs are safe for the microwave if you need to heat or reheat a beverage, as well as the freezer, so you can, for example, freeze portions of fruit in each glass. Unlike some insulated glasses, they can be washed in the dishwasher, so cleaning is easy when the party is over. RTIC's Double Wall Vacuum Insulated Tumbler does exactly what an insulated tumbler should do. It keeps cold drinks cold and hot drinks hot. And at a lower price point than its competitors, our testers didn't see a drop-off in performance. Our testers found the RTIC tumbler held the same temperature an hour after the liquid was placed in the container for cold beverages. And for hot drinks, the temperature did cool, but it stayed hot enough. This excellent temperature regulation is thanks to the double-wall vacuum insulation and the stainless steel construction. Of the two brands that are trying sliders, YETI is fairly successful, while Pelican’s lid is a hot mess. It’s not clear exactly what the issue is, since the basics of the mechanism seem the same, but the Pelican lid always dribbled a stream of water when we turned it upside down. The YETI “Mag Slider” lid isn’t as magical as it sounds, but it works fairly well to stop anything more than occasional drips. The one category YETI manages to squeak ahead of some competition is in spill prevention. The Rambler’s slide cover actually stops most (but not all) leakage and only lets drops escape. In comparison, the Pelican will dribble out a stream. The RTIC is more leak-proof, but the YETI really is ready for those times when your friend fires up the motor on the jet boat and you haven’t finished your drink.

Our testers liked the insulating capability of this tumbler and that there was no metallic taste in the water during testing. One tester noted they'd like to see this model be a bit taller and thinner and with a cover to close the lid's drinking hole. "This wine tumbler style isn't something I'd recommend to a friend, although the quality of this one is good," concluded another tester. "If you like wine-style tumblers, this one is the one to buy." Nothing can ruin a morning quite like taking a sip from your coffee mug only to discover that your beverage is unappetizingly lukewarm. Thankfully, there are tons of insulated cups on the market that are ready to rescue you from enduring such an experience. And there are loads of variations, from petite mugs that are perfect for camping to giant tumblers that are sure to quench your thirst throughout the workday.

We spent a month using the best insulated tumblers side by side with water bottles and travel mugs. We found that the RTIC – 30 Ounce Tumbler gives you all the same insulation performance and better leak-proofing at less than half the price of the best-known YETI – Rambler. If you’re willing to pay, YETI does give you a slide-open spout that’s less annoying, though you run the risk of dribbles and drips. Table of contents If you or the person you’re buying for already have a Hydro Flask water bottle, buying a matching tumbler for use around the house is a nice touch. They’re good looking tumblers, but they don’t perform any better than the other brands to justify the huge price difference. How we selected How well the tumblers prevent spills and leaks: We filled the tumblers to maximum capacity with room temperature water, sealed them, and laid them horizontally on top of a towel. Then, we inspected for leaks, noting where the leaks occurred and how much water was spilled. Insulated tumblers come in a wide variety of materials, including stainless steel, plastic, and even ceramic. The right material will depend on your specific needs—for example, if you'll be using it primarily for cold versus hot beverages, or if it needs to be resistant to drops and dents for families with small children. Generally, stainless steel is ideal for most situations since it is easy to clean, resistant to stains, and more insulating. The RTIC – 30-Ounce Insulated Tumbler is a bargain-priced drink vessel that will keep your beverage just as cold (or hot) as other brands.
