They were financed by a wealthy Scottish businessman, George Fife Angas, who was also Chair of the South Australian Company. A deeply religious man himself, he was impressed by these self sufficient people, mainly farmers, who were reputedly hard working and had high moral standards. He was sure that they would be assets in the development of South Australia so he gave them a good land deal and did everything he could to facilitate their journey. Against the silence of the forest, her footsteps upon the twigs and needles sounded impossibly loud.But mainly, this is a love story, with passions running high and overshadowing everything else. These are girls in their teens. There is no question that it is praiseworthy for the writing alone, and I enjoyed the history. I did become impatient with Hanne’s continuous, overflowing of declarations of love. For me, this is a case of sometimes less is more. (I know, I know, this review is long, but almost half of it is Kent’s glorious prose!) Like, the whole premise of the novel seems to rest on Ella's unhealthy obsession getting out of control, but nothing ever really happens? Ella lusts after everyone and there is seemingly sexual tension in everything, but in the end ... nothing really happens. You expect there to be drama, but there is nothing. An eyebrow-raising scene that seems completely out of left-field, but overall not anything particularly exciting. But that heart was fading, and so was the day. Devotion is mostly an upbeat story with a sad ending. There is the typical gallows humor that can be found in all of Makos’ books. With the exception of the last letter that Jesse Brown wrote to his wife Daisy, the story really never gets too sappy. Also, Makos refrains from taking a sanctimonious attitude. Jesse was a great pilot and even though Tom outranked Jesse, Jesse was the section leader because he had more flying time.
