About this deal

I unfortunately have been having to wash my hair every day as my hair doesn’t like refreshing, so maybe that is it? I normally wash my hair very infrequently so it might be due to overwashing? I’m so confused. As hard as it might be to wrap your head around all this, you can’t deny that, in pretty much every aspect of life, the natural approach is always the best – so why not your hair? My hair is a mixture of 2a/2b/2c waves, depending on the day. I have waves that are wavy at the top, straight in the middle and curly at the end sometimes. I suspect this could be damage. I’ve always looked after my hair, but it is dyed with semi-permanent colour. I’ve used sulphate and paraben free products for over a year now and I always use heat protection on my hair whenever blow drying or styling.

Don’t worry if you have frizzy curls to begin with. It takes a long time to get those big juicy clumps of curls in the shower if you’re just starting out.Don’t worry, you don’t have to go cold turkey, you can wean yourself off at your own pace. It may even be a good idea to start your new haircare regime when you’ve got some time off work, in case you’re worried about complete styling fails thanks to this new method.

And yes, if you have dry ends, definitely go for a moisturising deep treatment once a week and not protein. Try and avoid coconut products as these can also be very drying. Some people will still need to use shampoo, but try finding one that is sulphate-free and as natural as possible," she suggested. Remove silicones from your routine Bend forward & blot dry by cupping curls in a towel – never wring or disturb your curls. Then air-dry. If you’re in a hurry, use a diffuser. So, if you’re asking yourself whether you should go for that final, sulphate-based wash, the answer is yes. A clean skull and squeaky clean curls will make the transition into the CGM method much easier. What is Co-Washing? Yes, if you have wavy hair, you can use The Curly Girl Method. But it’s important to remember that adopting this method will not transform your wavy hair and make it coily. It may make your waves more defined and even more wavy, but it won’t change your hair type to a totally new one. Also consider your styling products. Do you use gel or mousse? I get a great cast with gel but it made my hair dry. I now switch between mousse and gel and I found this helped a lot. Towel-drying your hair (towels rough up your hair cuticle and lead to frizz and tangles. Most curly peeps like to plop their hair, but more on how you can dry your hair below) Doing the method this way can be a bit wasteful if you’re not careful as a lot of the gel will rub off on the towel.

My issues are that my waves are just sort of flat, not really defined, there’s not much volume and it’s incredibly frizzy. I also tend to get an oily scalp the day after washing. Establishing a co-wash routine is easy – simply listen to what your hair is telling you. Once you feel it needs a good cleanse and moisturizing, hop in the shower and get to work. You’ll basically want to use your co-wash as your newly appointed shampoo. As the curls begin to form (or waves), apply gel or mousse on soaking wet hair. Begin to scrunch out the water a bit. To be truly Curly Girl compliant, you need to avoid specific ingredients that merely sit on your strands and don’t penetrate the hair, which can cause the hair to look heavy or lank and unable to hold a bouncy curl. Ingredients and practices to avoid are: You’re going to want to find a light co-wash, one that won’t weigh your hair down leaving it looking greasy upon drying. Wet your curls thoroughly and massage your co-wash of choice in using your fingertips; follow-up with a scalp brush too if necessary. If you’re suffering from dryness and breakage, invest in a good pre-shampoo mask, such as Philip Kingsley Elasticizer Deep Conditioning Treatment to moisturise and help strengthen.” The Curly Girl Handbook advises against any brushing at all, suggesting you should use your fingers to brush through your curls while wet with conditioner, so as not to damage your curl pattern. But Joleigh recognises this is not always possible for every hair type.
