If you’re anything like me, you’re probably a bit surprised at all the different DIY kimonos and styles on this list! Also, who knew you could make a kimono out of a scarf or a t-shirt? I love the creativity! One thing that I really love about this yarn is the stitch definition you get. It also works up beautifully as it doesn’t split and it feels great in your hands. Yay for having a new, chunky weight yarn available!

Advice on adapting the designs and patterns / yarns to your own liking is also provided and is easy to follow. The drawings of the patterns are clear and easy to understand and enlarge, sizes given in inch and cm. I love the style of this one. Unlike most of the other DIY kimonos on this list, it’s perfect for a bit of colder weather too. The pattern isn’t free but I’m including it just in case you love the style and want to make it! Place panels side by side on a flat surface while lining up the drop stitches and the garter stitch sections. With a length of yarn and a tapestry needle, seam up the center, stopping approximately 4” from the middle center. Versatile cardigan knit in 2 panels with a variety of easy stitch patterns that make it pretty to look at and fun to knit. Rated easy by the designer and other knitter. Bulky weight yarn. Designed by Jessica Reeves Potasz for Mama In A Stitch. Also available in a kit.

This kimono is squishy, unique and definitely fun to knit. I think it goes great with jeans, but it would be really cute with leggings as well. Any other ideas? Messy bun, kimono and leggings – that’s probably my fave idea of all.

Right side

Repeat rows 1 – 6 from previous Garter Ridges section until piece measures approximately 44” long, or desired length (keep yarn needs in mind), ending on a row 6. This is another pattern that is beginner friendly yet super chic to wear. If you scroll to the bottom of the pattern below, you can see the photos and how it’s basically two rectangles seamed together. If you can knit and purl, this will be easy for you to make for yourself or as a gift for a friend or loved one. If you haven’t learned to knit, you can find my tutorial and video in this post HERE using the method that I find easiest. For more complex designs or those who like taking their time to knit at a slower pace, it can take weeks or even months. Don’t be worried if it takes you longer to knit the sweater, we call it slow fashion for a reason. It is better to take your time and enjoy the process.
