About this deal

You can think of the 8507 as a 'lite' version of The One (above). It offers a similar spec but makes do with a 60Hz display, so it may not be the best choice for keen gamers. Elsewhere, picture processing drops to the Pixel Precise Ultra HD, which has 25% less power than the 5th Gen P5. The set also carries a Dolby Vision Game mode (though this only supports DV up to 60Hz, not 120Hz like LG's OLEDs), and provided you select its Monitor setting the OLED807 can deliver 4K 120Hz without suffering the half vertical resolution issue that has affected some premium Philips TVs. You get Android TV as your smart software here, but note that it isn't Google TV – unlike Sony, Philips hasn't moved on yet. This is disappointing in terms of usability (Google TV is superior to Android TV for ease of use), but when it comes to how comprehensive the streaming support is there's little to criticise here.

Build quality is outstanding too, for both the lovely metallic finish to the OLED panel’s rear and the heavy duty dark grey metal stand the TV sits (and can be rotated) on if you’re not wall mounting it. This desktop stand is slim and centrally mounted, enabling the TV to be placed on a narrow bit of furniture. As with the product it replaces, the 55OLED807 has a 2.1-channel audio system – some of which is visible on the TV’s rear panel. There’s an all-in total of 70 watts of power, driving four high/mid drivers and a subwoofer. Philips can hardly be accused of failing to provide enough set up features, though, to help pretty much any buyer get the picture looking exactly as they want it to look. Max light output HDR (high dynamic range) while displaying small white square taking up 10% of the screen (measured in Nits)

There's support for both AMD FreeSync Premium and Nvidia G-Sync VRR formats, and input lag on 1080p/60Hz signals measured 15.1ms in my tests. Not the absolute lowest in town, but low enough to likely not significantly contribute to a poor gaming performance. There are actually two game modes: Optimal and Optimal (Auto). The latter mode allows you to enjoy the benefits of VRR. In terms of other gaming features, there’s support for HGiG and Dolby Vision HDR gaming, along with cloud gaming via Geforce Now. Google Assistant is available on Philips Android TVs running on Android O (8) or higher OS version. Google Assistant is available in selected languages and countries.

It’s well-populated with content these days, too, with the likes of Apple TV Plus, Disney Plus, Prime Video, and Netflix all present and correct. It’s still missing the catch-up services for one or two of the UK’s main terrestrial broadcasters, but Philips has covered that by also equipping the OLED807 with the Freeview Play app, which brings all the UK’s catch-up apps together into one easy overall interface. Approximate diagonal size of the display. If the manufacturer does not provide such information, the diagonal is calculated from the width and height of the screen. The maximum number of colors, which the display is able to reproduce, depends on the type of the panel in use and color enhancing technologies like FRC. The inclusion of ALLM means the TV automatically switches to the low latency Game mode when compatible consoles are detected, and this delivers an input lag of 15ms. While not as low as some of the completion, it’s more than fast enough for all but the most demanding of gamers. The rest of the colour palette is lifelike and convincing – and, to be absolutely blunt, much better judged and much less aggressive than we’ve become used to from Philips. There’s still intensity of tone when needs be, of course, but when it’s describing skin-tones (in particular) the 55OLED807 is more lifelike and convincing than the model it replaces. And this is true even if you’re using one of the more, um, vivid picture presets.

Philips provides options in its huge onscreen menu system to tweak or turn on/off a vast range of picture processing elements. For the most part we welcome this, as it gives you lots of control over a welter of processing features that aren’t always as helpful as they think they are in their default settings. Be warned, though, that Philips’ setting generosity does create an intimidatingly extensive onscreen menu environment. Memory size (Flash): 16 G, the actual available disc space may differ (dependant on e.g. (pre-)installed apps, installed operating system, etc.) The Philips OLED707 has the same OLED panel, same 70W speaker system and same P5 AI processor as the flagship 807 (above). However, its Ambilight system is three-sided rather than four-sided.
