About this deal

I published a post on Elm Silent Teacher, an educational game designed to help you learn the Elm programming language through interactive exercises.

Use visual aids, including props and online tools to bring explanations alive – Jo Morgan – audio– video Annoying muiltiplication came up several times (specifically 7 * 9 and 8 * 6). Since the content was meant to be about learning Elm and not about practicing multiplication, I found that distracting. Those students then might go all around the world and over their careers think of the hundreds of thousands – if not millions – who will benefit from their medical education that related to donated bodies. Just like every person is different, their internal anatomy is widely different. So the best way we can really learn is through looking at the body itself.” Doing rather than telling is actually a powerful way for children to learn as they have to focus more and it reduces their cognitive load. Why teach the silent way?

Objective

You communicate by drawing or showing in silence and children watch in silence too. At the end of the demonstration, children are invited to ask questions such as, “Why did you draw an arrow through the numbers?”, “Why did you divide the boxes in half?” etc. I immediately thought it was a good idea, talked it over with my husband and we both thought it was well worth doing – to contribute to the doctors and surgeons of the future.” Pythagoras’ theorem (without any demonstration) and its application in a specific case (distance between two points in 2D space)

Alexander Renkl discusses the different types of self-explanation prompts in his interview with Ollie Lovell here Elm Silent Teacher is open-source; you can find the code at https://github.com/elm-time/elm-time/tree/main/implement/elm-time/ElmTime/learn-elm He said: “The donor bodies we utilise are at the heart of everything we do in anatomy. When we receive a donor body into the university, they become a ‘silent teacher’. Make sure students know whether they are right or wrong, and don’t wait until it’s too late – Jo Morgan – audio– video

Key concepts

A minimalist game where beginners can discover what coding is all about and the key concepts behind code, with no explanations given. Through several series of questions, the player is led to guess the rules of this language and learn from his own mistakes. Objective Following the detailed child-led discussion and explanation, the children carried out their own peer teaching in pairs with a number of exercises. Develop competing hypotheses when observing teaching and learning – Ollie Lovell and Craig Barton – video
